Not reading much here about Honesdale, PA.
Moved here to full time residency back in 1982. It was like going back in time to a nice place!
Came from Connecticut and it was as if I had gone back to the times of my youth. Wonderful country, friendly people, small shops, etc.
Now, that's not to say that it has not changed BUT not all that much. Real Estate has gotten a bit more expensive, BUT the area is still quite the secret as they say. There are folks moving into the area from out of state, but mostly to the south of Honesdale in the Pike county area. They still want to be close to their 'roots' in the Metro area [New Your-New Jersey] and Honesdale is just a bit out of the special 'radius'.
Much to see here and still many good places to build or buy. As for the school sysem it is exceptional!
Several well, up to date NEW elementary schools, three [3] middle schools and one [1] high school. The system gets the best of those looking for employment in education since the pay scale is one of the BEST in PA.
The high school continues to go thru major renovations and recently completed a 'Tech Ed' center that has set the standard for many school districts! Well over $1,000,000. in equipment alone !
Take a look at Wayne County if you like the country yet still want to be within 'striking distance' of major cities!

I am still house hunting for a rustic, rural property with acreage in the area, but will be staying with my parents in Pittston until I make a decision on a house (or to build). The Cul de sac lifestyle isn't for me either, but I'm happy to be with my family and closer to trees for the winter. Thanks again for all your help on this board.
P.S. Where are you running--the bypass? You'd be much safer on the track at Pittston Area, or running through Highland Hills and Willow View, which are now rougly connected in the back due to continued development.
Hey there Mike! Thanks for the compliments; you really know how to make someone cyber-blush! LOL! I actually run along Highway 315; I know I'd be "safer" by driving to the track at my old alma mater of Pittston Area for my runs, but something about driving eight minutes to go running instead of just being able to head out the front door to work out in my own neighborhood just irks me. (Perhaps it's that gross feeling when I'm sweaty, shirtless, and stuck to my car seats after my workouts?) LOL! Actually, if you haven't been in the area in a while, I'd recommend you check out the new primary center in Hughestown. The track there, which adjoins Quail Hill, is absolutely wonderful with beautiful mountain views; I found it so relaxing that I had eight laps done in no time! Another favorite spot of mine is to park my car in the 300-block of Susquehanna Avenue in West Pittston and run all the way along the shady street to the Exeter town line. Since I like running that route so much, I know I'll love running through the Hill Section in the upcoming years!
P.S. I'm not the only crazed lunatic who jockeys for position along Highway 315; there's now a man who rides his bike to work along the dangerous stretch of highway between Pilot and 84 Lumber at rush-hour! I just think it's a bloody shame that so many people are moving into Pittston Township (Population has doubled from 1990 to 2006), and don't have a "real" neighborhood where they could safely find recreation or conveniences within walking distance. Sprawl just isn't for me, even if my parents and most of my peers seem to drool over it.
MSWVA,
The fed prison is in Waymart, very close to the state prison grounds. There's a new B&B being built outside of Waymart, towards Keen Lake, but I'm not sure when it'll be completed and when you're planning on visiting. Your best bet for now would be a hotel/motel in the Scranton/ Dickson City area ( I saw another post that listed quite a few of them).
As for nursing programs, you won't find anything in Carbondale or Waymart. I'm not sure which of the local four yr colleges, if any, offer a nursing degree, but I think Allied Medical and the vo-tech in Scranton (though they go by another name I think) offer shorter term programs.
Theres only one way to save Carbondale, and I challenge your way Justin Taylor.
"Carbondale is an upscale area nestled in the mountains and is quite nice. The home prices in the area have been escalating, and there are people of all ages there. I know people who live there, and they are many many young families in the area. It is very safe, beautiful and peaceful."
Unfortunately I have to disagree, although at one time it was one of the Richest little towns in Pa. dating as far back as 1799. Called "Ragged Island" it's was never "Two Men from Italy . I have yet to meet these Realitors. ????? The city was first called "Ragged Island and Lackawaxen River. The Indians Named it first. The wurts Brothers would later Change a few Times. We are now Carbondale, Lackawanna. Almost as if the Names exchanged Era's.
Let me introduce myself, my name is Dawn Race and I have been involved in a Project called the "No 2 Drift Crew" 1846 I started my Research on this Paticular Mine in 2002. We discovered a Mine Shaft below that would lead us in so many directions above ground in these past 4 years than the directions subsided below us.. Actually more disturbing than the 16 young miners whom 14 out of 16 to this day, still remain. I challenge Our Mayor Justin Taylor to a looooooong awaited debate on our Ideas of how to control our little subsiding messes. I will Challenge anyone My EAST, NORTH and SOUTH Abandoned Mine Projects to Justin Taylor in Progress as of October 2005 "Fallbrook" 5.7 Billion Dollar Project. I will post the plans of this lil secret Justin has failed to involve his own Community.
Until then he choses to tear down our buildings one by one with no plans to rebuild. The Fallbrook Project is run on 'abandoned Mine reclamation Funding from the State. Heres the Problem. Justin Never reported my Complaints to the community, State or Government on his behalf of his concerns for his own Community. I Reported them. He would not even look at my research documented by DEP ,OSM representatives and Engineers. Why do you think we are so low as far a High Risk? because Justin has made the Fallbrooke Project look more of a hazzard then the rest of the city in need. So when our East side Mine Burst no funding was available from Femma.. WHY? because Justin ignores the seriousness of the other parts of his community. And is focusing on HIS OWN.
Look for yourself, Behind Fox motors on Rt. 6..... it goes from No residents ( Carbondale Township) and will follow behind the Carbondale school and end in Justins Back yard. within the next two years. 5.7 million PEOPLE all on the west side. What about the rest of the city? Once the land and our money is used on the "Justin Estates" what do you think happens to the rest of us. we all live in a Parking Garage????? Open your eyes Carbondale if you cant see an Act 47 "City in Distress" only after damages are done, If you can't see them coming our way then you must be in on the "secret" The Fallbrook Project.
I will be posting a copy of the Fallbrook Plans. Once i figure all this out. And please someone Challenge me, the sooner the truth is told and we are all safe and Funded a Memorial for the 16 young boys Justin Ignores everyday will be in Motion. Although the "First Mine opening was built 1831 aka The No 1. drift another Mine was being Built, this being the No 2 Drift. 1831. Only this one would take these young mens lives in 1846 and sealed off forever in 1847. We have uncovered that opening. I was granted 50.000 dollars, For the safety of the entrance its initial inestigations, Cranes, My Hydrolic Crews John Wasko, our Archeologist from Gennit and Flemming, Delaware John Martin and John Stietler. down to one of our Favorite welders in Carbondale Joe Dick. Thank you Joe.....
So as of 2004 Justin was aware of the No 2 Drift, but declined any involvement. Justin was also aware of the Est side Mine. 2005. Before it flooded. I have the complaints sign for both Mines, if any one would like to take a look. for the last couple years its been tough, every direction I take to get Real Funding for being the first Pioneers Justin has stepped in to interrupt me. Also going as far as to have two of his Officers take me into the Police station Jan 1 2007 to try and shut me up. Then Blaintly accuse me of beating up two 300 lb
cops in the Carbondale News. Ok i'm gonna stop there. They lied and they will be punished. Photos say a million words, and so do my witnesses.
I am not here to get into peoples personal lives if it has to do with my project vs. justins Brain Plan. I have what ever is needed to prove my " accusations"..more like facts. so by all means if you have a question and are interested in knowing any further information. Please right back by all means. you opinion is whats gonna save this town now. NOT JUSTIN TAYLOR
Yes, Carbondale IS the First American Anthracite Mining Industry. We initially Build those "Monsters" that now sit upon Steamtown's tracks in Scranton Pa. When our industry began to move on into a million dollar buisness, so did our workers to help it grow beyond. In the late 1800's. Ran by the Wurts Brothers. Others had to move were the coal was the greatest. Our little town faded into the cry of Today. Miners were shipped from all over, Mainly Ireland to work in "The Black Diamonds Fields" making Carbondale also Americas First Anthracite City and "PIONEERS". Our Mayor uses that name in Vain an awful lot. hmmmmm?
I'm not quite sure how to use this site and how these threads work. But I took a shot and planted my opening Opinions here. all I ask is Open your EYES. its right in front of you.
A corrupt CPD, plenty of public information on our past and present Officers abilities to keep thier hands to themselves. and do their jobs by the books. i know how they work and i know what they have done. Don't get me wrong there is def. some good guys in that station. They know who they are Other than them that station needs some cleaning out.
To our Mayor I leave the oppurtunity open to you as well to come forward publically and answer alot of questions people are gonna be having. I will gladly come to City Hall and show these people what exactley you have did in the last 4 years. And Exactley what he has not done. And how he fooled us all. by his promise to rebuild has he done that yet Carbondale ? No.
I have the Master plans for the city written in 1958. I also hold The No 1 Vol the history of
Lackawanna 1928. You wonder how I know so much and where i got all my information from. My father was asked to clean out a nieghbors house "Campell" he happened to be a clerk for city hall many decades ago. He kept all the originals and or copies of them. Guess who's hands they fell into. MINE. You have Challenged my Intellegence long enough. trying to make it look like I have no clue. Well here ya go buddy, straight up in this public forum.
I highly encourage the city to sit down and look at all my documented proof so that way you will no longer be misguided by the very man who watches us sink. I feel a meeting with the public should be addressed before Election date. its only fair to let the community know about the all three of these projects, and let them decide if we needed it more on Fallbrook......when old cemeteries flood our public parks, our street consume our vehicals, our houses slowly subside into the very mines who bulit them.
Step up to plate Justin, you and I both know whats going on. Only i'm for the safety and health of the Children and residents in our entire community, were yours is on the west side Project and later deverlopements. I also hold the township plans. For the record people, Justin and his "people" jumped over too projects concerning Abandoned mine relamation funding. and don't use the school as an exuse. Because it is no way 253 acres long nor does it need legumes, ponds and everything else that comes with the Fallbrook Plan.
So what do you say Carbondale? we were promised new buildings before this Plan went active. That plan is into approx 3 million dollars of our abandoned mine funding. and thats facts. we have not seen a cent or any progress in rebuilding our city. Why because your trying to build your own. How selfish. and as far as all the good he did......??????? somebody help me here.
I will be back trust me....I am so glad i have finally been able to get past Justins Prison walls and tell the truth. they tried to shut me up and they only made me louder. I wish the best to our small community. I hope to see change for your own saftey and health. Theres no way we can survive on Jstins plans. Because inall reality they don't include us. You will see when i post The Fallbrook' Plans.
He needs to stop ripping at our exterior in order to ver and candy coat what hes NOT doing. Just to shut us up. its our interiors and below us that need to be stabalized first. That should be your main concern. Not releveling the west side AGAIN.....so you can build condos. ya gonna hook your community when another flood comes through. I didn't think so.
I tell ya where this whole POLITICAL MESS started. Is back in 2004 when i showed him the complaints and the founding of 16 real PIONEERS.....our own Heritage and he walked away. well I didn't Justin. Because alot of those boys who died built that City Building you sit in.
I'm sooooooooooooooo disgusted. I will stop there, and if we can take a moment of Silence to the very boys ages 14 to 22, who gave their lives to give us ours. are you related to any? look closely at the names.
Thank you
Dawn Race
I also wrote a screen play and documentary in memory of these young Pioneers. My fight with Justin has put that on the back burner for now. But i believe getting the word out and going public is what our FIRST PIONEERS would want done first. Please take a close look at these boys names.
John Hosie Supervisor - risked his life and found himself saving himself. he survived
Alexander Bryden supervisor/Forman risked his life to save as many men as he could he saved all but 14. He survived and like John Hosie play a big part in these mens rescues. remember we had a cap with a flame. Total darkness over came them all when the mine caved in.
Casulaties
Patrick Clark 14 yrs old Door Boy. His horse was trapped. They had later put him out of his misery and left him incase the others needed food. Patrick was thrown outside the Mine where he broke all his bones, dying two Days Later
Roderick Phillips was recovered by Alexander Bryden, but this young boy had gave his last breath in his heros arms.
Mark Brennan
John Brennan
Patrick Walker
Ebenezer Williams
John Farrel
Peter Crawley
Patrick Mitchell
Anthony Walsh

Thank you all for taking that Moment. These are the Boys that are gonna save the city and the funding for Rails and trails, tourist ( a reason to build a Hotel and Garage) We are the First people, and we deserve credit for what we have and That is either A national historical landmark to live off of or sink in Justins failures.
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES I TO SEE IT THAT WAY. THIS IS A GOOD CITY TO RAISE YOUR FAMILY, BUT IF YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING RIGHT MR. MAYOR. THE LAST PART IS NEVER DONE FIRST, SEE IN ORDER FOR PEOPLE TO PARK THEIR CARS OR STAY AT A HOTEL, THERE MUST BE SOMETHING TO COME AND SEE NOT "ROCK LOTS". WITH THE BUILDINGS THAT ARE STANDING AND IN GOOD SHAPE WHY NOT TRY TO GET COMPANIES TO LOCATE THEIR MAIN OFFICES HERE. LITTLE TOWNS ARE KNOWN TO HAVE THE BRAIN OF THE COMPANY AND THEY JUST RELEASE THE EXTENSIONS OF THE COMPANY TO MAJOR CITIES. REALLY NOW WHY WOULD ANYONE COME TO A TOWN AND STAY AT A HOTEL OR PARK A CAR TO SEE WHAT? A TOTAL OF MAYBE JUST MAYBE 12 STORES IN THE ENTIRE TOWN??? JOBS YOU SAY OK, WHO GETS THEM PEOPLE NOT FROM CARBONDALE? PLEASE WHEN I FIRST MOVED HERE THERE WERE STORES ALL OVER AND THE ONE THING THAT GETS TO ME IS THAT THERE IS NOTHING FOR KIDS OVER 13 TO DO IN THIS TOWN. YOU HAVE A RULE THE PARK HAS TO BE SHUT DOWN AT DUSK, EXCUSE ME WITH THE $18.8 MILLION YOU JUST GOT 3 WEEKS AGO CAN BE USED TO PUT LIGHTS UP AT THE BASKETBALL COURT IN RUSSEL PARK, OH WAIT DID THEY NOT JUST REDO THAT PARK?? ALSO WHEN THE COACHES HAVE TO PUT MONEY OUT OF THIER OWN POCKETS TO PUT LIGHTS UP ON A SCHOOL FOOTBALL FIELD THAT IS PRETTY SAD, ALSO SINCE "92" NOT GATE NOR THE GROUND RAISED FOR THE SCHOOLS BASEBALL FIELD, GUESS YOU DONT WANT ANYTHING FOR THESE KIDS, YET YOU YELL AND FINE THEM FOR DRINKING IN WOODS OR SOMETHING, DO NOT FORGET YOU AND YOUR FELLOW OFFICERS ONCE DID THE SAME AND MADE THOSE DRINKING SPOTS. SO STOP YAPPING AND START ACTING LIKE A OFFICAL AND DO SOMETHING LIKE INVENT JOBS COAX THEM IN, BECAUSE IF NOT FOR JOE WELL THE PEOPLE ON THE WESTSIDE WOULD NOT BE RICHER WHY IS THAT THAT YOU SAY? WELL HE BROUGHT IN THE OTB AND THE OTHER COMPANIES THAT ARE NOW ON AN AREA THAT ONCE WAS A JUNK YARD.

I have nothing against Carbondale, but like previous posters have said, it is a bit run down. Run down can mean a lot of things, in this case, it's just old and really needs to be updated a bit. It's not like it's swarming with gangs and graffiti, if that's what you want to know.
And yes, as a previous poster said and as a Honesdale native, I can tell you it has been called "Garbagedale" for years, though I don't think it's necessarily deserving of that name. On the plus side- lots of countryside and quiet up that way and tons of shopping and restaurants at nearby Dickson City- and my favorite- Steamtown Mall in Scranton! I don't live in the area anymore but I STILL do my Christmas shopping there!
