Direct TV Service and no local HD channels
Is anyone as ticked off as I am about not getting local Wilkes-Barre channels in HD on Direct TV? We bought a new HD big screen tv (over $3500) and now come to find out we can't get HD on ABC, NBC or CBS. All the NFL and college football games planned for this holiday season and the Super bowl will not be in HD. Direct TV informs us that they are "planning" to carry these local stations later in the spring of 2008. DishNet has local HD, Blue Ridge Cable has it but the biggest company of all and the one who advertises that they have more HD than anyone (Direct TV) doesn't. They also tell me that they won't give us NYC or Philly stations because it is against the law. I am really considering changing to Blue Ridge or DishNet. I hope that everyone who is going out to purchase that big HD TV for Christmas realizes that it is a waste of money for this holiday season if you have Direct TV. Also, Direct TV subcontracts to a couple of local TV Cable installers Lehigh Valley and Halsted Communications. I would not recommend either. One cause $1000 damage to my ceiling when the tech stepped through from the attic. The other company has made and cancelled or not shown up for the installation appointment. The upgrade to HD is still 1/2 done. I still am waiting after 3 weeks to get a tech back out to my place to finish the job. VERY DISAPPOINTING!

Yea it was on the news a few times over the last few months and they never really have an answer. wnep has this on their site:
Robert Mercer, a spokesman for DirecTV said, "We should be ready to launch the market(HD signals) early next year. There are some technical steps that need to be completed before the launch. There is no exact date."
We have been told local High Definition signals are "just around the corner" for DirecTV customers.
In all honesty maybe you should have researched it before buying the set? We've had the tv for about a year now and love it, despite the lack of the local channels. We had no problem with Halstead either, we just made sure we had all the wiring done ourselves before they showed up...

You know, when a company sends out the massive advertising that Direct TV has done and you call their sales department and are told that they have over 75 stations including local; most people would take this as factual. I am an honest person and expect honesty from others. I feel that I was deceived. You are right however, I am responsible - fool me once shame on you - fool me twice shme on me. I wish I had discovered this forum previously to ask others. As far as Halsted, you are lucky for their good service. My experience has been nothing but negative.

We moved to Matamoras in September. We have DirectTV and "local" HD stations. However, the "local" stations are from New York City as we are considered part of the NYC viewing market. My husband is upset that he can't get any Scranton news. Oh well.

Directv is still a better choice over cable IMHO. Just sit tight and you will have HD in a few months.

I have DIRECTV. In order to get local HD channels for now you need to hook up a special HD antenna to your satellite receiver and pick them up off the air. I called them and they said you have to sign a waiver and we should receive them in 45 days. Whether this is true I don't know.

We are receiving HD local channels through our old antenna on the roof. We are getting Direct TV hopefully this week. We had the tech come out 4 times and each time they said we had no signal. Then one tech said we had to cut down some trees. We did, but the tech that came out today said there still were about 7 trees still blocking the signal. My husband and I just got done cutting down 10 more huge trees. Now we are scheduled for this weds. for another tech to come out. We asked the tech today if he could install the dish but he couldn't because he didn't want to get charged back if we didn't get a signal, now we wait again till Weds. and I sure hope this new tech doesn't have a problem with the darn signal. What a pain with this signal thing. If you have trees on your property blocking the signal, get them cut down before thinking you will be watching Direct TV!

Could you of installed it on a pole on the roof? I have seen a few houses do that where it was heavily wooded.

whatgoesaround] [ if your local channels are broadcast in hd you should be able to get them off air provided your tv is an hd tv and not a monitor you can even use rabbit ears but i suggest you go to radio shack and get an hd antenna it looks like a wing and you connect it just like a regular roof top antenna directly to you tv theres a website that tells you where to point it i will post it as soon as i can find it
