Hi everybody! I am a 30 year old single female, planning on visiting both East Stroudsburg and Stroudsburg in a few weeks as I am looking to possibly relocate to PA. (I'm also looking at the Bethlehem/Easton/Allentown area as well.)

Are there any major differences between the two cities? I like that East Stroudsburg is closer to the Delaware Water Gap and the Worthington State Forest, as I am a huge lover of hiking and kayaking. I'd like to move to a city that is friendly, has greenery (trees, grass, parks- not all cement and sidewalks), and has decent things to do- restaurants, bars, shops, pool halls, etc.

Is one city considered safer than the other?

Stroudsburg is the county seat and has more of a downtown, more restaurants, art galleries, and bars. East Stroudsburg has the state university and the hospital and is generally considered more blue collar but it also has nice sections.

Can I ask where you are relocating from?

Thank you for your response! I currently live in Rahway, NJ which is in Union County (not a very friendly county).

Why don't you check out the half way point between the Stroudsburgs and Easton (the Slate Belt)? I really don't know if anything is available - but it is beautiful territory and it has it's own bridge to NJ in Portland, PA. It is not too far to travel to shopping in Stroudsburg or the ABE territory.

Ah, Rahway. I lived on Jensen Ave. from 1960-63! Lots of hustle and bustle in that area these days.

the slate belt??? i've never heard anyone encourage someone to move TO the slate belt, it is a very depressed area, where the major industry or slate is almost entirely gone, the other major industry is the landfill industry!

the pro of the slate belt is the cheap housing and convenient location.

If you could find land/housing close to the Portland bridge it would be very convenient to get on 80 east. It is very picturesque in some of the areas outside Portland and Mt Bethel. But, like I originally stated, I don't know what is available. Plus; anybody moving there does not have quick access to shopping or medical facilities - they would have to travel. If they are travelling to work; they might be traveling through areas that they can shop?

No, I don't think I would want to live bordering an old slate quarry, downtown Bangor or the landfill in Pen Argyl.

But I thought that's why people from NY/NJ were moving to PA? They plan on commuting to their big $$ jobs in The City, so the lack of industry isn't really a factor.

Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg are almost one town, their seperated by a white bridge by wall mart.I just moved up here last summer from jersey myself.Pretty nice area, not really a city, more a busy suburburb, but definitely a little college town area.Stroudsburgs main st has a lot of nightlife,a lot of cool bars and little clubs, sherman theatre for big music concerts.East stroudsburg has some cool bars on crystal street, but stroudsburgs usually busier. To be honest though, the whole pocono area is awesome.Theirs like 3 or 4 little citys about a half hour to an hour from town, casinos and ski slopes ten minutes away, outlet malls, beautiful mtn views everywhere, I love it up here.As far as crime, this area doesn't have that much, nothing like the bad places in jersey, no real ghettos, like you'd see in the Newark and Paterson areas, definitely a different vibe from jersey completly! The only somewhat ghetto places are like 2or3 gated communities that have gangs in them, but their pretty isolated. The good thing up here too is that your right next to route 80 and stroudsburgs a ten min drive from the nj border

This debate is so much like deciding where to put the deck chairs on the Titanic. I have not been to Jersey in 15 years and I can't imagine how bad it got to make this crap hole look good. I went to a gun range several years back and thought Stroudsburg was a s**t hole then, so I guess you folks don't set the bar too high.
