First off I'm not defending Joe but the post actually used the N word in reference to about 6 people, 5 of which are white so I can't really consider it a racial attack. Second 570717 let it go, your going to beleive the sad stories of your friends and just remember that those of YOU from political families all have YOUR own skeletons in the closet. Trust me just let it go, your in Fl. and not here and you get it all second hand from one side only. Connorsdad I agree with your points for sure, but Janet's family is not Janet and she has never openly supported the site or publically spoken about at all so again you are creating the rumors that you are complaining about. Sure alot of the posters like her, but there is also alot that do not. The site is full of alot people from allover the county and thats mainly because of the Cordaro court cases. Sure its over the top but its a political site that was intended to expose and thats never a pretty situation no matter how you put it. Joe knows what he is doing. The man calculated everything for a reason and I wouldn't be surprised if the post was there just to provoke the response that it received from Judy. Nelson was also miss quoted and those of us that actaully saw the meeting know that he said that he does not condone that word or the use of it but the paper conveinently left that out while they did attach him to a Union and then proceeded to say that he supports the site. That was a pure and simple PR campaign move against the unions, so 570717 again you cannot beleive what you read in your friends paper, the only paper in town. I will defend Nelson, he is a good man and only wants best for the police and the city and he has been speaking at meetings long before the current council was even elected. This is what happens when the media is controlled by the gov't or the gov't is being controlled by the media, the truth is lost.
We do not know the half of it? Your kidding right, your telling me that while I'm in the middle of this political nightmare and your in Naples Fl that I do not know the half of it.......Atty. Rhiener is dead in the water, the lawsuit is finished otherwise she would have never said that on live TV. The last court order to her atty. stated that they needed to prove without question that the statements that were made and quoted in the suit are libel and they cannot, if they could then they would have filed the amended the suit and proceeded, but they haven't because they can't. If the suit was still going strong then Judy would have used her popular statement "I'm not allowed to comment on the case", but no way she came right out and slammed Joe. The case is dead. Rhiener was out gunned by a DC atty and he knows it. You think that these suits are a joke to the locals they are, but then why would the ACLU and Public Citizen be involved if they were? These organizations are national and would not risk a hit to their reps to deal with nonsense, they actually are constitutional issues. Sure we don't like the content, but the base of each case is constitutional period. I for one am glad that in this day and age when our civil liberties are being slowly dissolved that there is at least one person who is willing to push the envelope for good or bad at least he is doing it. The message might be wrong but the process is protected and thats whats being defended here. Good or bad we all have rights and we all execise those rights in a different manner. If we all think alike then really no one is thinking much at all are they?
I encourage anyone with an interest in the matter to read the article in this morning's Times-Tribune that reveals even more vitriol that was spewed forth from Mr. Pilchesky. Apparently he also attacked Stacy Brown, an African-American staff writer for the newspaper, by saying that he should be dropped off in the South during the 1930s, while also using the word n*gger to refer to him. This comes on top of the anti-gay remarks he made against me during my brief pre-banishment tenure on his site. He says he hides behind the First Amendment in making all of his remarks.
Mr. Pilchesky and his minions are the EXACT reason why Scranton can't progress forward. What sane, logical, educated individual would want to move to a city where such racism, prejudice, and homophobia is inherently promoted and nurtured instead of being vehemently opposed as it is in most RATIONAL cities in our nation? This comes on the heels of another major racial controversy erupting in Wilkes-Barre over how a city police officer and a group of residents yelled racial slurs at African-American and Hispanic children who were part of a step-dancing troupe in the city's recent Santa Parade. This also stirs up painful memories of hate mail, shoves, and threats I received from a few homophobes in my community several years ago.
All of these have combined to give outsiders the impression that NEPA is full of racist, homophobic, uneducated morons, and sadly I won't offer much defense to that assessment. When you see how popular Mr. Pilchesky is (including having some fans on this forum) and then see the racist ideals he stands for, it truly makes me ponder my decision to stay here. You can expect a heated letter to the editor about these issues from yours truly to appear in a future edition of the newspaper---we need to make it known that racist homophobic thugs can NOT be tolerated in NEPA. Anyone who supports this man, his off-base remarks, or his idiotic web site have lost my respect.
Paul even you have to agree that you cannot beleive the ONLY paper in town that is owned by the family that fully funded the mayors first campaign for mayor and has funded all the people that he supports as well. Sorry but the Scranton Times is one paper joke and we have no other conflicting paper to help balance what true and whats a PR CAMPAIGN TO TAKE AWAY THE SPOT LIGHT FROM OUR RECORD SETTING BUDGET OF $84,500,000. LAST YEAR IT WAS THE SMOKING BAN AT THE SAME TIME OF THE YEAR. ITS FUNNY HOW ONE THING OR ANOTHER BLOWS UP AT BUDGET TIME AND QUICKLY GETS THE ATTENTION OF THE PAPER AND THE RESIDENTS WHILE QUIETLY IN THE BACKGROUND THEY WILL PUSH THIS HUGE OVER STUFFED BUDGET THRU. Think about it!!!!!!! Timing is everything isn't it.
Dan, I agree that there is a lot of political corruption in the city and county (and the state for that matter) that needs to be exposed to keep constituents well-informed. However, using such vulgarity day-in and day-out is not the proper way to get these points across. I watched the council meeting last night, and Mr. Ancherani did say that he got his news from Doherty Deceit when he was at the podiuim. There is a lot of useful information on that message board, but in my humble opinion it is useless if you have to wade through slurs like "n*gger" and "gay" every other sentence in order to access it. Mr. Ancherani has my respect if he's willing to wade through that garbage to find actual "news."
Dan, whether that word was used against whites or blacks makes no difference. As a gay person I cringe whenever some straight guys jostle each other around on my campus and call each other "f*gs." Even though that slur isn't directed at me, it is still used by others as a means to put one another down, and it makes me feel like a second-class citizen whenever I hear it used. I'm sure most African-Americans would be inclined to say that hearing whites calling other whites "n*gger" is just as offensive. Any way you slice it, Dan, Pilchesky is a vile creature for standing behind using that word because it is "protected under free speech." It's one thing to call someone fat, stupid, smelly, etc., but when you start kicking it up a notch to Nazi, n*gger, "f*g," etc., you cross the line from juvenile banter to racism and intimidation. That is inexcusable, in my humble opinion.
I still say Pilchesky's original intentions of exposing corruption were noble, but he's allowed his site to dengenerate into garbage. I don't care how frustrated people in Scranton are about their government. Leave ethnic, racial, cultural, and sexual slurs OUT of it! All of the fine folks on that message board are quite capable of getting their points across without acting in such a crude manner. Just look at yourself. You have dual memberships, yet I have yet to hear you attacking people with racial slurs. Why can't the others do the same? NOBODY takes that site seriously any more, Dan; most who I talk to in Luzerne County who know about the site (just to show how far-reaching this debacle is) giggle or chuckle when I mention it, which showcases just how little respect those on that site garner. What started out as a great way to air political dirty laundry has descended immature, juvenile nonsense. I knew the "caliber" of people I was dealing with when instead of debating me or trying to disprove my idealistic claims about the city they just attacked my sexual orientation. That truly says a lot about someone's intelligence and ability to debate.
Agreed but when you did post why did your sexual preference come into play? Paul I don't care that your gay but not everyone is like me, so when you do put that out there you are bound to get it back. Sure the N word is bad and that I do agree with but I still say that the fact it was on Council day when it was said it was done to provoke a response from Judy and it did just that. If you go back and look at the posts from Joe on council days they are usually negative towards Judy and involve some sort of a name calling issue, that leads me to beleive that he was baiting her into saying something from her seat at a PUBLIC meeting. I don't agree with the word but I can say this everything else that was said in that quote has been repeated several times before on council days without a reaction, that word did it and now we get to see where this is going to go. Some do think that the site is a joke and its easy for those in Luzerne county because they don't deal with the these issues that are up for discussion on DD. Nelson does wade thru the crap for the news because he like me does not believe anything in the paper, just look at how they misquoted him and made him out to look like he is racist which is the farthiest thing from the truth. It is what it is a nd that is a site to provoke reactions and to expose the corruption of the Doherty admin which Judy is a huge part of. If you read the site there are those that got on Joe's ass immediately after it was up. I followed your posts on the site and what do you want to say? Its just not the form for your outlook and thats not wrong per se but maybe its just not a good match. Believe me here on CD I'm very restrained sometimes because I know that this is really not the right forum for I want to say, so I don't say it. Whatever they do they do as long as we can keep this forum to a low roar we have a good forum for our collective views whether they are the same or contradictory of one another. Let DD stay there and we'll keep this here and maybe we'll forge ahead in abit of a more legitimate way of viewing the cites positives and its negatives. Like I said earlier if we all thought alike then none of us would really be thinking much would we.
What you folks need to do is encourage Ozzie Quinn to continue with his petition to Richard Connor to have the Wilkes-Barre Times-Leader expand its coverage into Lackawanna County. Wilkes-Barre has 40,000 residents and has two popular daily newspapers. Scranton has 72,000 and has just one paper. What's wrong with that picture? Granted Wilkes-Barre has a larger suburban network population than Scranton, but Scranton is still the primary city in our region. We get home delivery of the Times-Leader, and it seems as if this particular paper is a rising star in an otherwise declining industry. Circulation is growing while more folks than ever are turning to the Internet for their news. I'm noticing a lot more Scranton-area folks having their obituaries, letters to the editor, social engagements, etc. published in this paper, and I'm sure if the paper either expanded its coverage of Lackawanna County or began to circulate a second edition (perhaps in the evenings) specifically for our Northern neighbors that the Times-Tribune would collapse. Out of these two options I'd just prefer a larger regular paper, as I think it would be unique to have just one newspaper covering Luzerne, Wyoming, and also Lackawanna Counties to help bring folks in our metropolitan area together after years of bitter polarization.
The Times-Leader routinely gets under the skin of county elected officials, and they even broke rank in this most recent election by only barely endorsing Greg Skrepenak as their third choice for county commissioner whereas the Citizens' Voice has traditionally been viewed as being Wilkes-Barre's more politically-connected paper (even moreso now that the Lynetts own it). This past week just about every front-page article has been attacking county officials for improper usage of taxpayer-funded debit cards, county vehicles, handling of the county's massive debt, etc.
I...... Apparently he also attacked Stacy Brown, an African-American staff writer for the newspaper, by saying that he should be dropped off in the South during the 1930s, while also using the word n*gger to refer to him. ..........a city police officer and a group of residents yelled racial slurs at African-American and Hispanic children who were part of a step-dancing troupe in the city's recent Santa Parade. ........
This was said in a PUBLIC forum??? and yelling such garbage at CHILDREN!!!!! What in heaven's name is going on!

Yes. City Council President Judith Gatelli aired her grievances against this web site during last night's weekly council meeting. She rattled off various names that she had been referred to as on that web site, and many of them were rather offensive. She kept the tirade somewhat light-hearted though when she came to "fatass" and then just said "well I agree with that one." Junior City Council President Douglas Miller also approached the podium to express his disdain before rattling off the names he was called as well. Yes, adults on that web site were threatening to "strangle" a child. Very mature.
That web site's intentions of exposing corrupt politicians are noble, but they're turning off more and more people now that they've resorted to using words such as n*gger, f*g, Nazi, gay, etc. If I'm ever reading a post on there and come across a word like that I immediately skip over the rest of the reply, no matter how relevant the rest of the contents might be. There's just no excuse for that sort of behavior in the year 2007---40 years after Dr. King was assassinated trying to defend minorities.
As far as the parade goes, that is unrelated to that web site, as this atrocity was committed in Wilkes-Barre during the Santa parade. Yes, these attacks were hurled at children. For as much progress as NEPA is making, the homophobia, racism, intolerance, etc. certainly drag it down a few notches.
Nobody seems to care about the huge budget do they? Mission accomplished on Judy's part. She played the bleeding heart poor me and poor Mr. Brown card and guess what all you guys can talk about is the N word. Nevermind the $84,500,000 record setting budge in the history of Scranton. Nevermind the fact that we are buried in over $400,000,000 in debt and the new budget calls for another $6,000,000 of borrowing. Nevermind the fact that the recovery plan was over in 2005 and they are still trying to hide behind it. We needed to raise taxes last year right? WHY? If we were so broke last year that we needed to raise taxes, but yet this year we have a budget of $84,500,000??????? You seriously have to be kidding me. Don't you think its funny that Judy decided to do this now? This is not the first time she has been called names and its not the first that DD has gone after Mr. Brown, so why bring it up publically NOW? They did exactly what they were palnning and thats get the people off the issue of the budget and onto something and someone else. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Last year it was the smoking ban to cover over the borrowing of the proposed $44,000,000 but he settled for what $10,000,000? These are huge dollar amounts that drastically affect the cities finacial state and all you can talk about is DD and the N word. Mission accomplished!
Timing is everything and should be taken into account before the actually incident. ITS BUDGET TIME!
Instead of placing blame on Judy and Doherty why not blame your boy Joe. He is the one that started all this. It was him who shifted all this attention on non city related issues.
You have created comic book super villians out of regular people with your views on Judy and Doherty and the rest of them. A white man Called a black journalist the N word on a message board that people view. That is a serious offence to me. Especially considering Joes Self-rightous comments and how critical he is about everyone else.
He deserves to have this be front and center for all to hear. A voice like that does not belong In MY CITY.
