Can someone that works for Penn Dot or whatever agency works on the roads please enlightened me as to why our roads are in the condition that they are in.
A few examples come to mind- all the potholes on rt 81. As soon as you get into the next state the road is great. Scranton Central expressway- every morning there is a backup because of the bridge problem- all the time I have been driving this road, I have seen someone working 2 days. The other road that comes to mind is the road going to Viewmont Mall - the one in front of Lowes. That road doesn't even qualify as a road it has so many potholes.
Why don't our construction crews work at night so we don't have all the congestion? I guess an even better question is why do we see so many roads under construction and no one ever working?

Our roads are one of my favorite subjects. You might want to look at this City-Data (PA) thread: why are the roads so bumpy in Pennsylvania?. Then you might want to check out this story: Scranton region listed as one of 20 worst in U.S. for road conditions : Pennsylvania Highway Information Association.

The real question is where did all the money go that was for road maintenance? Well the politicians and the unions have their hands deep in the cookie jar.

Yes that did cut into the budget. But we only temporarily fix potholes with a quick patch that washes out with the first hard rain. Why waste our time repairing if it is not permanent?

I always feel that we should adopt the best practices of other states. The problem is that we don't really want to change.

Don't worry, the gasoline tax has gone up 10 cents this year and will rise 10 cents each year for the next 4. By then the roads will be wonderful.

The problem with that legislation was that there were no provisions to require efficiency! We could be feeding a black hole.
