Hi,
We want to buy some land in the mountains/country, away from everyone but close enough to get to town for necessities and close to good doctors and hospitals. We want to build a log home on the land. Would prefer it to be near a nature preserve so someone doesn't come along and build a mall next to us.

Pocono Pines, Monroe County, Pennsylvania land for sale - 1 acre at LandWatch.com
not sure of your budget. Timber Trails is a desirable lake community on the Pocono Plateau...this abuts a greenbelt, but the price is quite high. You
might want to contact a realtor, and have them searching for the type of property you are wanting. Tell them you are looking at building lots that abut
nature conservancies, gamelands and greenbelted areas

Try Drums,PA near Nescopeck state park. Lots of open land and truly in the woods at high elevations.

Milford is a very nice town, but crowded as hell with tourists on weekends.

Butler Township (a.k.a. "Drums) is the fastest-growing municipality out of the 76 in Luzerne County. New homes are popping up everywhere as a lot of people are moving there from NY/NJ to be near Hazleton but away from the crime/illegal immigration issues that plague that city. I really don't think it would be a wise choice for this family to consider investing themselves in since ten years down the line Drums may very well be home to another industrial park, a major shopping center, more housing developments, etc.

I'd personally recommend the Greentown area. You'd have a grocery store, gas station, post office, and other conveniences, but you're just far enough away from Scranton and Milford to prevent you from being overrun with a lot of sprawl for probably a few generations to come.

The Pocono Region is rich in natural beauty with clean streams, wild flowers, ferns, wildlife and many lakes. The Poconos are named after the Pocono formation, a geological delineation for the grey quartz conglomerate which is prevalent throughout the area. With that out of the way, you can find the Poconos on a map east of the Susquehanna River and I-81 and west of the Delaware River and NJ border and north of I-78, although the region stretches slightly beyond these lines, it is easy to find on the map...the rest is up to you. For the sake of reality (what a concept) and convenience you will notice that the surrounding regions and points of interest neighboring the Pocono Mtns are also items to be found on your map and virtually here at poconomtns.com - oh yeah, the animals look best when viewed not in the headlights! " end of quote from poconomts dot com
Funny, notice it says the region stretches beyond these lines.

Yeah, what's that supposed to mean? Nothing like being vague and indefinite for the sake of tourism and marketing right? That's why when I am travelling somewhere I look thru the usual sources and then come to this site to get the real-deal from the townies

It is, very vague and indefinite. The region, even in the Wikipedia, is " thought to be",
" sometimes included" and "loosely defined "on its boundries.
Its quite strange that an area would be called "sometimes included", like the slatebelt region.
I don't know if we will ever have a solid answer on this, but it is an interesting debate.
