I noticed one house had $5,000+ in taxes around Tannersville, Stroudsville (sp?). What's up with that?

I don't have to be AT the ski slopes but in a town nearby. Which are the most reliable slopes for snow and has a lake nearby for summer. I will be there mostly in the summer and would like somewhere with activities. I don't know where to search for houses for sale. Thanks.

Personally I would prefer Elk mountain area. There is a nice lake there, pretty year round, and next to Elk. Better area and better prices than the Poconos. But it depends on where you are traveling from. Might be a farther drive to Elk for you.

I agree strongly with the Elk Mt suggestion. Monroe county is no longer the tourist destination it was 40 yrs ago...it's simply a bedroom community for those that commute to the NYC metro jobs that wanted a "cheaper" place to live and could not afford Long Island, CT, or West Chester Cty. That of course has caused taxes to skyrocket due to all of the school expansion that was caused by the influx...not to mention the lower quality of life that the huge inflow of urbanites has brought with them...unfortunately city problems travel with those that move from the city. Elk might be. 45min to an hour further but trust me... It will be worth it...and more affordable. If your looking to get away from the city for peace and quiet and good ski conditions on slopes that aren't packed, then Monroe Cty is NOT the answer.
