I took my two young granddaughters to watch the annual 5 mile run in Forty Fort. Their dad, my youngest son, was running. The run started at 9 AM with the biggest field ever - 540+ runners entered.

At 11 AM, we watched the parade which still continued after 12:30 but we had to get back home out of the sun. The high school band, flag twirlers and pom-pom squad marched. The Irem Temple Shriners had several floats and presentations, including the Motorized Cooler Squad, yes, actual picnic coolers. The precision motorcycle team and the clown car delighted. Some local businesses, local politicians, Little League teams, fire engines etc, some groups tossing candy to the kids, and a local gentleman with a great sound system who plays appropriate music during the festivities.

There were several veterans from the Korean war, Viet Nam, and some very elderly gents from the VA hospital. They truly received the thanks and applause from the spectators.

Some people will continue on to have picnics, or visit cemeteries, or just catch up on yard work. A typical small town Memorial Day, and the start of Summer.

Shamokin had their annual Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts over the weekend. Always catches us by surprise when we go to visit my wife's brother! They had rail excursions featuring old PRR coaches, horse & buggy rides, etc.
