Default How long will the new Pocono People stay?

I lurked here many times in the past. But finally decided to join.

I read many threads where people complain about the roads...(winter Maint.)
Do you "new" people realize that where most of the new housing in the pocono's have been build was summer areas only. The reason for this is the winter weather. When the winter returns for the duration how many will be able to commute to their jobs? It wasn't uncommon 20 years ago to get snow measured in the foot range every other week. Where one was best to just stay home for days at a time. Ask some of the "old timers" about MT. Pocono. They will tell ya' about Nor'easter's that brought 5' of fresh powder. Drifts to the rafters. I figure we are overdue for a return of old man winter.

So back to the question..... How long will the flat landers stay when the mountains show their real colors?

I've been staying for 14 years and don't plan to go anywhere anytime soon.
I think the long commute is the problem, but what people here don't realize is that the flat landers get there share of snow and lots of ice when we get snow - put that together with a mobscene of traffic on a good day, and you can't beleive what a mess you have. People who have lived here their whole life have no idea what traffic really is. It would sometimes take me 2 hrs to get to work, just 25 miles away, sitting in traffic. I'll take this anyday!

The Pocono's are lovely and rural and that's why many people move there. Is it for everyone, no.

My daughter works in New York city and two girls she worked with this year moved from out of state to go to New York city thinking they'd love it.
Both moved back home!

We had our share of winter weather in NY and NJ. Even without the snow, traffic could be a hassle. I too will take this anyday!

I know all about weather in North Jersey.... I grew up in Rockaway.

I've been in Pa for most of my adult life. Never wanted to be in the Pocono's as it's just too Jersey. As for the commute..... Your dreaming if you think those up along 940..... Or 115 north of Effort are getting out when a big one hits. Let alone those that live up around the army depot. Heck, 380 wasn't even finished when we last had winter and most of those houses up in that region weren't their 25 years ago.

I say to the new folks...... Keep a stocked pantry and save your vacation days for winter.

That wasn't snow the other day..... Thats was flurries. What you get like 6" or so? Heck even Me up here in the nether regions of NEPA only go 10". When a storm comes you'll know as the roads and the towns will be closed for a few days. I remember a storm back in the 90's where some towns made it illegal to be on the roads for three days.....

The only reason the "flatlanders might leave is to get away from the people who consider them flatlanders!

Hey Stan I grew up in Denville.........We both probably went to Morris Hills.

I can remember huge, huge, storms in NJ. Ones where people had to go to hotels due to no electric. Or........people who had to try to find a hotel around Morristown because they could not get home.
Unfortunately, most of the hotels booked up very early.
Some tried to wind their way down route 10 to get up to Hopatcong.
It was a no go.........and they had to go into Kmart there in Dover, and use it like a shelter.
There was snow so bad sometimes it was up to the top of the cars when you were done shoveling.
So far living here the worst was for us in 1995/6 when it snowed everyday through the winter. It was still about equal to times spent in NJ.
The problem here in the Poconos is the commute. That is going to be unreal if this keeps up as its going.
One time when I worked at the Rockaway Mall. I got out late, the stores do not shut for snow. I traveled down route 80 on solid ICE........All I could hear is the crunch, and munch of that ice. Scared me to death.
From that time on.......I went down Mt Hope Rd into Dover. I knew that Dover would be out plowing. They were thank heavens. When I got to route 46 ........there were all the plows. So, even going down that mountain was not an issue. My ride home that back way rather then route 80 was an easier task.
It is hard for me to imagine someone having to ride route 80 all the way to the Poconos in an ice or blizzard storm.
Many will return to closer surroundings to their work. The long ride, the weather, the back ups will put many a new homeowner on their way back
East.
115 up the Effort Hill...........not good for travel........neither 380 or 940.....
Winter as it is going now, will be rough.

This was my point exactly. I'm not saying they should go.... Or stay for that matter. I'm just trying to get the new folks a little more mentally prepared. So when it does happen they aren't stuck for hours like last spring. This is a really beautiful part of the country. But it has it's issues.

And yes I went to Hills.
