I am wondering if anyone is or knows of someone that has recently graduated from the massage therapy schools in the area. A friends daughter plans on attending the school. The daughter says the placement rate is over 90%. ALso she insists many of the graduates are making $50-$150 per hour. (The girl thinks this will be her salary since that is the going rate (I believe some of the resorts are charging the $150 rate).
The admissions counselor has painted a rosy picture- insists full time work is easy to obtain and salaries are extremely high.
Personally I love massages but I fear this girl will go into debt and only make minimum wage for a part time job.
Looking for your experiences!!!!

I think a professional massage is very therapeutic and beneficial to one's health and well being.

Having been to places like Sri Lanka, Thailand and India, I understand the value of a good massage.

I am a bit skeptical of the claims made by the person at the massage school. The typical price of a one hour massage here in Philly is about $50 - $60, and although there is also a tip, I'm sure the masseur or masseuse does not keep the entire amount as there are other expenses. Earning $150 an hour? Maybe if you're John Travolta's personal masseur ...

Check out this link; I think these salaries are a little more realistic: Massage Therapist Salary Information | Best Jobs | US News Careers. Take notice that the bottom 10% made only $18,420/year and the top 10% made $70,140 in 2012. I do not think that too many start at the highest salary.

It does bother me that your daughter's friend is claiming such a high placement rate and such high salaries. Even if a resort charged $150/hour for a trained therapist; the therapist would not get paid that $150 - probably only a small portion of that money.

One other thing that bothers me is that schools, like my local community college, will jump on the bandwagon for our local casino and train dealers. They can advertise high placement levels for a short time - then the jobs are filled and you only get one when somebody is fired or retires. I can picture masseuse jobs at the new Kalahari - but will they go to experienced therapist, with a great work track record, or to greenhorns?

PS If you want to bring your daughter back to earth; ask her to message your back for an hour and then ask her if she wants to do that for eight hours a day!

this is the one I've been to here in downtown Stroudsburg where they give discounted massages so the students can practice while learning:

Thanks for all the comments. You have all just confirmed my thoughts. The friends daughter is very upset with me right now- she told me I killed her dreams with all the negativity. She believes the admissions counselors. She actually told me I would never make these types of comments to someone going to Marywood, U of S, or that type of school. (big difference- she will only have training as a massage therapist- will not lead to other careers).
I apologized to her- told her she could do what she wanted- she didn't need my approval and wished her luck. (thinking to myself- you are going to need it). If she makes $100 per hr I am changing careers!!!!!
Perfect example of everyone needing to be PC. Now I have crushed her dreams!!! OH well- glad she is not my child.

I wouldn't count out the $100 per hour. There's an Oriental Massage by the Interstate and from what I hear the girls there do very well. But then again, they include the "Happy Ending". Hey, it's a living....

You can lead a horse to water but.....well you know the rest....tell her to go visit one of those massage schools and talk to the students themselves....of course the counselors are going to fill her head with lies...

If these jobs paid $100 an hour there would be many candidates competing for admission. Are there?

It all depends on where you work, ie, for yourself, for a spa, for a franchise spa.. There are many different career paths for massage therapists.
