Fisheye hit upon the real issue, no local police presence in Saylorsburg. The state police can take forever to respond even in case of a dire emergency, as the Lehighton barracks is where they are coming from, and in the past when I volunteered on ambulance, there was sometimes only one car on from that barracks, covering a huge territory.

I love the area and would live there myself, but only in full-time capacity and only with a way of defending me and my family (i.e. legal firearms). No way am I going to worry about someone breaking in at a potentially isolated location with a potential 30-45 min. police response. There is also extremely spotty cell phone coverage in many areas in/around Saylorsburg, so you need to really check out where you can use your phone in case of emergency. The violent crimes are few and far between, but they do happen. Ross Township had the municipal building shooting and there have been several other highly publicized gun incidents up that way in the past year or two (check around the Pocono Record website, I've used up my free clicks for the month or I'd link you to some articles). I also agree with knowing your neighbors and the security system recommendation as well.

Don't forget to also carefully price out homeowner's insurance - my parents pay a pretty hefty premium on their tiny vacation place up in Pike Cty because of the risk of property crime in a residence that is not occupied all the time. My aunt's home in Monroe Cty was completely stripped of copper just as we were ready to sell it to fund her personal care home stay, and we had quite a time with this issue. In fact, her insurance carrier dropped her after this, and my dad had to buy some "assigned risk" type insurance to cover the home for her until the closing date.

Just a few more issues for you to consider. I have one friend who lives on Mt Eaton Rd (away from the aforementioned Turkish compound thankfully) and she is very happy up there. My other friend's sister and parents all moved up to Saylorsburg, one full-time and one weekends/summer vacations home, and they all ended up selling and getting out due to many of the issues mentioned in this thread. Lots of luck with whatever you decide!

They did not get out there in time to stop that Porsche theft: Porsche stolen in Saylorsburg | PoconoRecord.com. Perhaps it was too late at the time it happened?

We could not really blame the area for that heist. People from all over come to that flee market. We enjoy stopping by from time to time.

Regarding the security systems and lack of police...I know a lot of people on the forums don't like the communities, but you don't have to worry as much if you buy in a community with a good security team. In our community in Pike County, security responds to our alarms within 3 minutes. Without them, we'd have to wait 45 minutes at least for a state trooper.
