ok so I need some advice... I found a great little apartment almost 2 years ago and moved in. I pay a good amount but it's 3 bedrooms so it seemed reasonable. we moved in and things were good, never thought anything was wrong. well.... the landlord had some bad doings with someone else who was renting a garage for a business. I don't know the issues and really could of cared less what was going on. so during whatever this guy went to the inspector to come out to the property and he noticed our air conditioner in the window and asked about people living above the other business. turns out from the notice we got on the door these apartments were built illegally without permits and my landlord has so many days to contact them and who knows what goes on from there. I called the landlord and he told me I have nothing to worry and he has other places, his motel. that is not an option for me with my kids. just the fact he mentioned that makes me worry. we haven't been told we had to move but I foresee it happening. would I be wrong to not pay my rent until I know what's going on because I don't want to be told to move and not have any $$ because I gave it to him?

You might want to call whatever dept left the notice for you-ask them what your rights are. They may or may not know but could probably direct you to someone who would.

I'm thinking (could be wrong) since you've been paying for an illegal apmt for 2 yrs, you'd have to continue to pay. You might be able to sue since the place wasn't up to standards but that'd be for a lawyer to determine.

Good luck.
