Every time I think I've seen it all out here in terms of wildlife NEPA holds a few surprises. We just had what looked like a momma coyote and two pups hanging out in our yard.

I truly love the beauty of nature out here.

We have had coyotes out back on several occasions - not recently. They usually thin out the deer and then move on to better pickings. They might take a few feral cats with them at the same time. I never saw a momma with her pups.

The main difference between the coyote and dogs is the way they run. Coyotes don't lope - they place one foot in front of the other. That is unlike dogs that land on their front feet after pushing off with their rear feet. In appearance; some dogs look very similar to coyotes.

Glad you enjoyed the experience!

My immediate thought went to the fawn and her baby that live behind the rhododendron at back of the property. We've seen mom today but not baby. Hoping the coyote didn't get the poor thing.

I love all animals in general but I'm always blown away by seeing these beautiful creatures just feet from me.

Eta it was definitely a coyote. The HOA put out an email a few weeks back that there have been multiple sightings abs keep an eye on your pets.

I live in a pretty rural part of NEPA and every few months we hear them for weeks on end at night time. Last summer our German Shepherd Dog got ahold of a pup and tore it apart in the woods by our house. =/ Most larger dogs do a good job of keeping them far away.

Cats and up to mid-size dogs could be attacked by coyotes. Here is a NY State article that describes the problems: Coyote Conflicts - NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. They do state that most problems do happen when coyotes are denning in March and April. But they are talking about coyotes with an average body weight of 40 pounds. Some of our Eastern coyotes get considerably larger.
