I agree with your remarks scrantonluna. All it takes is a bit of planning ahead. I always plan my trips so that if I have to shop at one of the stores in the Best Buy/Staples area, I do it on the way back down the hill so that I don't have to worry about trying to make the left there, which is nearly impossible most of the time. Also, rather than trying to make a left on the road that comes out next to Pier One onto Commerce Blvd., either go to the light behind Home Depot or the one by Circuit City.
I do agree the the road is horrible as far as potholes, especially the area right behind the Viewmont Mall. They could easily hire to company to spend one night after the mall is closed to fix the road.

The problem with Dickson City is that Scranton isn't large enough to be supporting so many different retail districts. In addition to the Viewmont area we now also have the Montage area, which is continuing to grow, as well as Downtown Scranton. At some point as all of these businesses continue to pour in as the county's population stagnates, there will be more and more businesses vying for the same consumer dollars. Something has to fail, and in this case it unfortunately looks as if it will be the downtown. If it came down to having a vibrant downtown similar to Ithaca, NY or a decaying downtown with two booming suburban chain retail areas, I'd choose the first. People won't come to visit Scranton because it has two Wal-Marts and a Best Buy on its periphery. They'll come here if there are unique experiences to be had.

Retail can be supported anywhere, as long as you have the middle class to support it. We need manufacturing jobs to support the middle class. We need reason to support the manufacturing.
If we have a strong middle class, and 1 in 10 in poverty instead of 1 in 6, we can have vibrancy. We can even achieve a reduction in the regressive taxation, that strangles the economy.
Maybe the cart is before the hoarse with the ratio of retail to poverty, but its a start. We have the tools to attract industry. We need the reason. They will come if we have jobs. (industry)

Regardless of the roads or repairs they will not pave and repair a road in the middle of the winter for us to get more storms and have it end up right where it is now. They'll wait till the spring if they are going to do it.
