Default scranton homes selling?

How are housing selling in Scranton PA? Do you think that it is a good time to sell this summer or do you think it will be best to wait til summer of 2009?

Sell now, and you are stuck in this market. Sell in 09, and chances of improvement increase.

I agree. There is currently a housing market glut in much of NEPA. The only encouraging news is that the MLS listings for the city proper have decreased to 283 from well over 300 in late-2007. I still recall when the inventory was sitting at around 200 though earlier in 2007. There has been some improvement over the past few months, but there hasn't been much.

With that being said I just noticed that my dream home along North Webster Avenue just dropped in price from $699,900 to $619,000! If and when it comes down to $200,000 over the next few years that it's on the market I just might have to gobble it up! The home is 4,823 square feet and has twelve rooms, six bedrooms, and 3.5 bathrooms. It was built in 1911. I know it isn't practical, but it's always nice to dream!

That's a beautiful home! The materials and craftmanship could not be duplicated in a new home, at four times the price. The only drawback to owning such a house is the cost of keeping it warm in the winter - but then again it's like the old adage about a Cadillac - if you complain about the cost of gas for it, maybe you can't afford it.

It may be more practical to own a house like that than you think tho'! You would have room for your future kids and as your parents get up there in years, you'd have room for them as well.

Dream all you want - I lived in the same little house for 53 years and I now have a house three times the size of it, down here. I'm living in my dream house now and loving every moment! I never watched HGTV until I thought of moving - now, I'm an addict!

BTW Paul, What would the taxes be on a house like that?

I keep telling myself this...with my home on the market for over a year...
"If it sells near my asking price, (and I'm bot lowering!) then I can afford to buy something I might not have afforded a few years ago. If it doesn't sell...then I just sit tight and wait for the market to change." In the meantime...I pray my parents will be still with me, so that we can finally live together so I can take care of them, and that they have less to take care of.

Let's pool our resources, Donna, and jointly buy that large house in the Hill Section. (Ruffles through pockets). Let's see...I have three quarters, a Cinemark movie stub, and a few pieces of lint. Added to your $618,999.25 we're in business!

Now...I have about $50,000 available credit on credit card @ 29% interest...
We could bring all our parents.........add their income! (We would then need a little extra income for a full time shrink for anyone who needed it!)
And the rental income from this dang house that I can't sell!

But just think!!! We are now $80,000. closer to our DREAM

Sounds great! I'm also liking that play set in the front yard of the home. I can see myself vegging out there to vent during tax season! LOL!
