Oh, sorry I can't see them from work. I will take a look at them tonight at home.

Wow, just saw them. Holy cow was that a lot of water! Sorry to see that. I hope the levees will do the trick in the future.

Once they are done it should help us out. Its a shame because our houses never had a drop of water in over a hundred years till they started to mess with the river banks across from us and upstream from us. Once they did that they had no choice by law but to give us the levees as well. The Army Corps is by law required to protect any area that received water as a result of their work being done on any other part of the river.

It's probably a 50/50 mixture between doing work upriver from you without providing Lower Green Ridge with supplementary protection as well as unchecked new developments going up in watershed areas to your north and east. As more and more vegetation in the Mid-Valley and parts of the Abingtons are eroded to make way for housing developments, parking lots, strip malls, etc., less water soaks into the ground and runs off into the Lackawanna River, which eventually flows downstream into Scranton.
We see this on a larger scale with the Susquehanna River. Wilkes-Barre and its inner suburbs on the Lower West Side are well-protected by a levee system for river levels up to 41' and 39' respectively. Other areas are not protected by levees, which leads to flooding problems upstream in Plains Township, Jenkins Township, and West Pittston, and downstream in Shickshinny, Plymouth Township, and other "downvalley" areas. I don't know why the levee system was never done all at once to protect communities along the entire length of the Lackawanna River and then the entire length of the Susquehanna River between the confluence with the Lackawanna near Pittston down to where the West Branch of the river meets it at Sunbury. We seemingly arbitrarily chose which communities get flood protection and which ones would not get it and end up worse off as a result.

I had a big smile on my face...
when I looked on this sight and there were comments about the Lackawanna River and my Jessup deck with the wine and cheese.I grew up in Brooklyn NY and love living in Jessup and kayaking on the river. Usually we drive east and put in at Jermyn or Archbald and end the trip at my place. It is fantastic and we do this trip whenever the weather permits. During the summer the biggest problem is low water. But if your attitude is right and you don't mind a brief walk it is terrific. While you are on the water you feel like you are in the country. As noted the most exciting part of the trip is past my place and through Mellow park however the trip from there down to Scranton is no way as nice as the upper river. Tried kayaking through Forest City with plans on landing in Jessup. Big mistake. Trees across the river everywhere causing dangerous conditions where the boat went under the tree but you didn't. We literally ended up the river without a paddle. We'll be drinking wine again this year so stop and say hi. Just got home from listening to Robbie Walsh perform up in WAverly. He is one of the best!

Welcome Jerry.......Robbie is definitely one of the best, been around along time. I live in Scranton 1/2 of a block from the river and we always put in at the bridge in Jermyn and paddle to Lower Greenridge. We also launch from Laurel St park in Archbald and paddle to the Olyphant anchor bridge in our white water boats when the water is up. Like the deck!

Your kidding! That was you...kudos to you and your wonderful deck! Don't know if you remember me and the two other boats. Two rec boats and my blue Necky Jive. We stopped to say hi. That is totally awesome. Small world. We will be up for the Riverfest again this year. We will most likely run the Archbald to Blakely section on Friday before the race if we don't run the Lehigh. If we have a bunch of rec boats with us, it will most likely be the Lack o water. Great to see another paddler. There was a neat family that lives near the put in near the ball field in Archbald. The dad and two kids hopped into their rec and touring boats and did a little drift to the first bridge with us. I was stoked to hear that you went to see my cousin Robbie. He is a great talent and a really top notch guy. If you see him again tell him his cousin Dan said hi from Virginia. What a small world. Hey next time you wouldn't be out of place asking us up for some wine.

Also, Jerry, the Lacky is prone to those trees across the width of the river in the upper sections and those strainers are something to take seriously. Please be mindful when coming into the big drop above Simpson. Scout both sides of the "falls" before attempting it. Depending upon river conditions the pour over can be about four feet high. The straight chute has undercut rocks at its margins, trouble enough, but if you add some wood to the mix..not so good. See you on the river.

Okay it looks like we have a team.I'll stay in touch and if you are intrested we could use my place as headquarters for a trip. I noticed that they have a park set up near the Carbondale entrance to the Casey but I haven't tried it yet and don't know how good the access to the river is there. Park at my house - truck the boats up river to Jermyn or Carbondale- get out in Jessup- Get the truck - come back and celebrate down by the river!
