There are some lead climbs and I have bolted a few in the past but for the most part its all top roped.

There also is a fair amount fo ice climbing when we get the cold weather in the area as well.

I spent years climbing at the quarry in Penn State and in NH, UT, CO and did some mountaineering in the Mount Baker wilderness area in WA for a summer. Many trips up Mt washington in the middle of the winter as well.

Here is a funny story. I used to live on St. Thomas and was working construction and running a few boats and I missed the climbing so we had our gear shipped down and in between St. John and St. Thomas is this rock outcrop that had cliffs that shot up 50' out of the water. We would run the zodiac upto the rocks and place a cam or two to tie the boat off to and just climbed from the boat. It was nice lead climbing too. No rappell down, just jump. The water was 80' deep at the cliff base.

I just don't have the time like I used to and I'm sure you know what I mean.

I miss my 20's.
Know the spots well, but haven't climbed them. We use to free climb/scramble on the cliffs above Blakely Falls and the rock face on the horseshoe bend above Roaring Brook. Crappy rock for the most part, but hey it was climbing. I took two years of mountaineering at East Stroudsburg. I don't have the strenght for it anymore. We used to climb the Jersey side of the Water Gap.

Sounds like a very exciting life you have led Dan. That must have been something.

Hey Dan, you mentioned CO climbs, which ones? I never climbed there but camped above the timber line on Mt. Ypsilon in RMNP. That was a hoot. I climbed Mt. Kahtadin in Maine with my brother. Actually it was a scramble up the Abol trail. That was a great one.

Here is a nice link to the site

I just got home from a early morning climbing session with my buddy. One of my closiest friends lived in Breckenridge for a few years. We did some local ice climbing then went to the Ouray Park a few times. Most of it was ice and local stuff there but we did some mountaineering around the Breck ski area for out of bounds runs, a few days out and back.

Mt. Washingotn in NH and the Mount Baker wilderness area in WA and the areas around the Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons in UT are where I have spent most of my time mountaineering and winter and or ice climbing.

WA also is where I did some Aid Climbing. The rock climbing for the most part is local to our region.....this area has alot of rock climbing, its not long per se but it has some really difficult climbs.

I love the winter ice and snow stuff so I have always been willing to travel for it. Life changes and somethings never get done. I was planning on doing Aconcagua in South America and McKinley in Alaska in 1998 but things change and finances change so I never got my 20,000ft. + summit that I wanted. But hey thats life. Maybe when I have a mid life crisis I'll go after them.

Paul you want to learn to climb along with the kayaks?

I never made it to Katadine to climb. We talked about it for a winter trip but just never did it. The link is great, got me thinking.................

I would love to make that climb again. Getting a bit long in the tooth to make that approach. Abol is the shortest and steepest of the climbs. Needless to say, we like the 3 wise men went home by a different route (hunt trail). I got really dehydrated on the trip. Went through 2 liters of water. We didn't have any filter and didn't want to chance it. I did see other hikers drink from a small creek. EEK I had dysentery once...ONCE..not again.

Knife edge is another great hike route. Two summers ago I got a chance to hike/scramble Flattop in Alaska. It is right outside Anchorage. Very nice route to the top. Saw moose (bulls, cows and calves) along the way. Thought we hear a bear along the way, but not confirmed. Anyway started the trip around 7:00 in the evening and didn't get off the mountain till 12:00. It was still bright.

Hey Dan, looks like you could take on his Honor at the Canoe-a-thon. It was announced that he will be the honorary chairman of this year's events.

Saw it in this week's article.

Wonder where he is putting in, Mellow Park or up da line in Archbald. I will be starting in Archbald. May see him along the way. Does he have secret service... sounds like he needs it up there with all of the posts.

Knowing Doherty, they're probably putting him in a canoe with a rope tying him to shore, getting a few pictures, then he'll ride in his SUV down to the finish line.

Can we use him as bait to fish for the giant three-eyed mutant piranhas spawned by years of acid mine drainage contamination?

Those fish are what keep you upright (as well as the sewage outflows in Archbald and Throop). Don't want to sample the waters there.
