WB only has population of 40K so it's more susceptible to swings in murder rates becsue of the small sample size. You need to be careful with small sample sizes. That list you posted probably doesn't even consider smaller cities like WB. For example when Plymouth had that those three kids murdered it put it on the top 20 list in Pennsylvania that year, that's just blip.

That said in 2013 WB would have fallen around #40 next to Baltimore. Granted 2013 was very deadly year and on an average year would not fall on this list. Anything over two murders is above the national average.

The murder rate just amongst the black community in 2013 would have been in the top ten and likely #1. A single murder in the black community raises that rate by about 25. These are not blips because it's not one time occurrence.

While on the topic murder rates on average have been dropping for about two decades across the country including large cities, WB is the opposite.

Then I asked the yellow-eyed crack dealer wearing the hoodie if Wilkes Barre is still dangerous.
He told me that if I buy a $Fiddy rock that I would not notice or care if Wilkes-Barre was dangerous.

I was so impressed by the two fine upstanding "taxpaying - haha) citizen's patriotism - displayed by their admiration of our 18th President Ulysses S Grant - that I gave them each a Hot Dog.

I was amazed that the crackhead dealer ate it.

I did not stick around to see what the hooker did to(with) it...

S Main Street is such a Lovely place.

The gang graffitti really brightens up the place.

Nice anecdotes. Mine are:

I can't recall seeing any Rebel flags but I'm sure there are a few...I doubt I'd notice them anyway. You make it sound pervasive. I doubt it is anywhere near that, perhaps in a certain neighborhood? Perception is an interesting phenomena.

My God daughter #2 (NEPA born n bred) is attending an elite mid-western university. GD #1 (LI/NY born n bred) graduated from another elite mid-western university. Not sure what this means to the topic under discussion, but I like to brag about 'em.

Glad you are glad you left W-B, at least physically.

On a sad note... Patsel's closed last year . A true loss for NEPA.

I feel sorry for anyone living there.
Instead of bashing former residents, how about we get back on topic? ^^^ People are allowed to move.

Another one bites the dust. I was bummed when Hottle's closed. I see that someone tidied up the place and reopened. I hope they do well.

I've never seen the Rebel flags, either. Not in Wilkes-Barre. I don't doubt that they're around, but I don't recall ever seeing one. I used to live in the land of cotton, well, tobacco, so that sort of thing doesn't faze me at all.

Not everyone is stuck in Wilkes-Barre. Some people landed a good job, some choose to live near family, and others return to care for aging parents. I know a few who stayed because they inherited mom and dad's house and the family business. It worked for them.

Is Wilkes-Barre dangerous? It can be if you're the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time... or you move into a sh*tty neighborhood that has been deteriorating for decades.

Why would someone attempt to be an Urban Pioneer in Wilkes-Barre, anyway? Gentrification only works if an area has something to draw people to it.
