You know how long it takes to constuct a bridge over the wide part of the Delaware?!
If it is not a speed train.......then bring a nice long novel with you because it will take
3 or more hours with stops to get to the city......
So far I know of about 20 years its been talked about........so.........who's bettin'
Summering - I heard that story when I bought my lot in Penn Estates in 1986. Maybe if gas hits $10 a gallon, it will exist more in the realm of possibility and at the rate it's going up, that day will not be far off!

With the population growing in leaps and bounds here in the NEPA region, I believe there will be a train going to NY from Scranton in the near future. How near, I dunno?

You know that that became a laugh with everyone right?
Someone would ask, and the person next to them would look away and giggle.......... I asked about it in '94 when I bought a home in Penn Estates, that realtor......he had a giggle. My dad, he giggled at me and said, "Oh they have been talking about that for years"
I think one day it will come.........But I think its 10 years or so away.
The bridge and construction will take forever. That span is huge.
Not ony that.......its the red tape and talks that take years before one plank is hammered down.

Summering - I suspect you're right. I might be looking at train tracks from the "bottom side" by then!

Hey OP - I think that was my post in the NJ Forum. According to NJ Transit... it will be done by 2030 so you may still be above ground by then : ) The piece from Andover, NJ (near me) should be completed in the next 3 yrs. It will be a plus but this station isn't very far from Neighboring Hackettstown or the Station in Netcong. When it reaches Blairstown, that will be even better. They originally proposed to go through Sparta but the people who live in Sparta said NO WAY!..fear that opening a station will bring less than desirable people to their "posh" little town : ) When they opened the Hackettstown station... many migrant farm workers, mostly illegal aliens flocked to that area and Hackettstown is now developing a large Hispanic community. Not that crime has risen any as a result...the feel of the town is just so different now! It use to be a nice little redneck farmer's town..lol : ) They are hard workers and although it's a bit of a culture shock for the resident out here, it has actually enhanced our little main street - new stores, new restaurants... eclectic mix. No more what should we eat tonight? "Italian or Chinese"... we have more choices now. One more down side to the train eventually reaching Scranton...the trip will be a good 3 hrs. into NYC. Many think that the folks in Scranton will not bother using it because you'll get bored quickly or tired of the long train ride?

I don't get all the hoopla over this. It's cost is equivalent to the gross national product of some countries. It's gonna do the same thing that Martz already does, and take longer then the bus, and cost just as much if not more, and the three hour trip only gets you to Hoboken! Then you'd have to wait around to catch another bus or train over the river to Manhatten! Who is gonna take an exhausting trip like this on a regular basis? Not I. It's not gonna gonna bring a massive population boom to Scranton. It didn't do that for Port Jervis? Why would it do it for Scranton? If that was the case, then the Martz Trailways would have brought the population boom many years ago. The fact is a 3 hour trip each way is just to long to convince people to move here, and then commute back and forth to work each day. Would you want to travel 3 hours to Manhatten, work an entire shift then take a train 3 hours back every day!?! The people who do that are a rare breed and very few to say the least. I think that unless it's a high speed rail, it's just a colossal waste of taxpayer money and time. I think after the novelty of it wears off, it'll turn into a very expensive flop, and be bankrupt in a ten years after completion. Stroudsburg has a market for it, because the commute time to the city is much shorter, but Scranton doesn't. I say high speed or nothing.

Ask ScranBarre he thinks its the saving grace for our area. I have to agree with the folks in Sparta NJ and can't imagine why Blairstown would allow it there. Blairstown is a bit of a uppdy town given that it has one of the better boarding schools around.

It will be a local train and the trip will without question be 3hrs+ to get to Hoboken.
