The eastern european cuisine is an interesting thing...My feelings, if you don't grow up with it, you won't try it, whereas I feel we're more open to trying other foods, at least I am...Mrs. T's are good in a quick fix if you can't get to a church or polish deli, or as I said before, you're at a high school football game...except nobody knows how to properly cook them..Pierogi(there's no s...it's already plural) are not intended to be deep fried. Sauteed or boiled...But again, quick fix, Mrs. T's gets the job done. This thread has been very helpful, I wasn't aware that NEPA still had such a strong value in the traditions of the old country...It'd be nice if we could get the valley on the same page(So far as I know, 1 polish deli, 1 german butcher, 1 german restaurant, which is really only OK german, not that good, and that's it.)

I agree!
I wasn't aware pierogi was already plural, thanks for the lesson! Mrs. T should be told, even their web-site says "Mrs. T's Pierogies"
Taken from their web-site of frequently asked questions:
What is the diabetic exchange for Pierogies?
One Mrs. T's Potato & Cheddar Pierogy is equal to one bread exchange. Three Potato & Onion or Sauerkraut Pierogies are equal to two bread exchanges.
Does Mrs. T's make a vegetarian Pierogy?
All of Mrs. T's Pierogies are vegetarian products with the exception of the Bacon & Cheddar Mini Pierogies. Mrs. T's food service bag of 72 Potato & Onion Pierogies may be vegan if the bag is marked as such.
Thier plural version is spelled two different ways here.
It seems like many of us NEPA folks crav this food, but it is hard to come by..boy what a killing a Polish Restuarant would make. And it is a all fairly cheap ingredients too. HMMM...Maybe I'll put my dream of my 'Coneheads Ice Cream Stand" on the back burner!
Paman...what German Restaurant are you referring to? I have been to the Alpine and loved it. Really enjoyed my meal. And where is your 1 polish deli? Please tell!

I guess Mrs. Twardzik didn't teach Tadziu popolsku...I figured towns as polish\ukranian\slovak etc as Shendo or Shamokin or Mount Carmel would have somebody who would advise them on those things, there have to be people up there who can speak it. The only German place I know of is Dunderbak's in the LV mall. Polish deli: Krakus in Phillipsburg, it's right off 22 by a car wash, kind of hidden, westbound side, small sign with two polka dancers on it on the street corner. German: Karl Ehmer Meats, Union Blvd Allentown...Where is the Alpine?!?!

Oh Boy PAman....you're in the wrong end of polish food country!
We don't have much, but we do have some...
There is a Polish deli with homemade poish foods run by a Polish woman in Hawley...you can a pierogi stuffed with jsut about anything...
I haven't tried it yet, but Novack's Food and Spirits "The Pierogi Bar"
has all kinds of polish food.
The Alpine....you must take the drive! It is in Honesdale...they also have an extensive German deli, with every kind of weiner known as well as a big selection of pre-packaged imported German foods.
The Alpine Restaurant
We only ate there once...I had the hungarian goulash served with spaetzle and hubbie had sauerbraeten. Both were delecious. You feel like you are in Germany when you are at this restaurant. Very home made, fresh and authentic. Honesdale is also a beautiful town to stroll up and down. You might just want to take a 'day' trip!

Summering my friend...if you don't like spicy food - pierogi are for you!
Basically like a ravioli, except not square, they are 1/2 moon shaped, and filled with a potato and cheese mixture. When I cook them, I boil just till they float to the top, then drain and saute in onions and butter. You can leave the onions out of you like. While potato and cheese is the most common filling, folks like them with a prune filling, sauerkraut, farmers cheese, potato and farmers cheese and just plain potato.
Try Mrs T's, they are not bad, and in most freezer cases.
I have always said..."I knew I found paradise when I saw that pierogi were on the school lunch menu!"

I'm feeling a pierogi 'phase' coming on!
