I suppose that area of PA is for retirees. I just wanted a change of pace and a place where I could establish myself. Again thanks for the feedback.
If you wish, take a minute and look up the "Kids for Cash" scam a couple of judges ran a few years back out here. Mind boggling. Either way, thanks for taking my posts in the light they were intended. Hope you both finish your education, get better paying jobs and find your little place to call home. Again, best of luck to you.

I'd say give it a shot, the worst that happens is you have to regroup and head back to the city or try something else out. When I first moved up here from Nj , I was in a bad spot, fresh off being homeless with my girlfriend and daughter. I had gotten a new job in Morris county nj that I made barely anything at, and couldn't afford to live anywhere in north jersey on my budget. I went online and found the poconos to have affordable rent and a fresh start.I make no excuses, I was scared of what could happen, but I took a chance and was glad I did! This area s great, people are right, it can be tough to find work but not impossible. If you have a CDL to drive a truck or bus you can easily find work up this way. Your also not far from the north nj border were the jobs are a little higher pay than the poconos.I love it up here, the mountains are beautiful, clean living, city data tends to drum up over blown negatives of the poconos and bring out the old timers who expected the poconos to never change and blame anyone and everything for that.If you really wanna make the move, plan on some extra cash for the move, research job options up here, as well as places up here, and take some weekend trips around the areas to get a better idea of what's its gonna take.Good luck!

Well, if you are set on the idea Tannersville is good since you have family there. I visit my Mom there a lot as she lives in North Jersey and we meet half way in that area. You won't have any culture shock if you live in Stroudsburg which is the closest decent town in PA. Find a suburb like Tannersville and you will have the country feel yet still be close to an urban area to shop. When people here talk about cultural problems I think they forget that you aren't moving to Wyalusing or some other farmy area that has mostly old folks. An area like Stroudsburg is just urban enough without actually being the city in my opinion.

I'll stick to NYC for now and consider moving further west. We all struggle here in the city, but people are generally happy and somewhat friendly, I'm sorry to appear so defensive but after reading dozens of negative posts, i felt so discouraged and upset because I'll be disappointing my children.
No. My one friend in Wilkes-Barre does interior/exterior painting and some handyman work. The other one is a self employed contractor. He often works on his own and hires people for big jobs. He works for well paid doctors who live in Dallas. You can have a life there, but it depends on what you do.

Just a terms of service reminder here. http://www.city-data.com/forumtos.html

Be civil, no personal attacks, flaming, or insults. We may attack ideas (politely) but we do not attack the speaker of the idea. Be careful with your words, there is a point where being direct crosses a line into blunt, in-your-face hostility. Please, report bad posts instead of engaging in flame wars on the boards. Insulting another member or a moderator will not be tolerated anywhere on this website. This includes Direct Messages and Reputation Comments.

If you disagree with something, say so, but explain WHY.

Stay on topic. Attempts to hi-jack threads by switching topics or going off topic will be deleted and infractions issued. This is not a chat room - when people hi-jack threads by posting messages that are of interest to only few people, the threads often stop being useful discussions of initial topics.

Hate speech, racism or bashing of ANY sort will NOT be tolerated. Rude posts will be removed and infractions issued. Do not quote or talk to trolls or your posts will also be deleted. Use the report feature instead.

I like this part too:
Quote:
Our opinions on a location or issue are just that, opinions. Highly subjective. Personal preferences. Quirks, even. Leave wiggle room for dialogue, others may not see things the same as you, or been there as long as you, and any one of us can be wrong. Pouncing on someone you disagree with runs contrary to the spirit of this board and its members. We are here to help each other.

I've removed comments that I felt were Patronizing and hi-jacking the thread. If you commented on those posts, your reply was probably removed as well.

Both menial jobs, but I've saved quite a lot over the years. So my rent would be paid for six months. I just want to rent for a while and see if I like, and if not move on.

Thank you fisheye.

As I've said before, I was the bitter one, I came here pouring my heart and expecting validation from people who don't know me from a whole in the wall. Not to mention majority of the people on here are working professionals. Pity is something I never ask for EVER. So I'm actually slightly ashamed.

I don't know if you're interested. But here is a link that shows the approximate pay scale of one of our area's largest employers: https://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/San..._IC1152130.htm. I know that these figures are not 'City' wages. But they are not bad for our area. They also have a workforce of around 3000 and are growing in leaps and bounds. they currently have three new buildings under construction and a fourth set for next year. They are fairly good size buildings costing many millions to build.

I am retired, but I still work as a Manpower 'Temp' for Sanofi. I don't like bills and it is nice not to have to worry about debt. Anyway, if you are interested; here is one link to Sanofi jobs: https://jobs.sanofi.us/employment/un...1707-5215056/4. Manpower in located in Tannersville and here is their link: Manpower Office Near You&.

I would also look at the new St. Luke's Hospital in Bartonsville (it's mailing address might be Stroudsburg). The construction is well along the way; nobody is currently in the building except for the workers. I always looked at the newest employers in any area; it is easier to climb to the top. Of course, now, I am not worried about the top. St. Luke's does currently have a hospital in Bethlehem and you could look at their job's web site: St. Luke's - Jobs. Possible you could ask about what will be available up here?

Anyway,

Good luck again!

PS Last year I worked with a man that was a teachers aid in Pleasant Valley and also did temp work at Sanofi. I believe he was offered a teacher's job from what I was told.

Wow. Your rent alone would be a decent living out here. I've never paid more the 550 a month in my life.

I don't understand how could move without a job already set up? As a TA here you will make $15 or so an hour. I also do not believe that you make more as a TA in the city then a teacher with a Masters degree here. I say this as a teacher with a Masters Degree. You are correct on there being jobs as bus drivers and TA's here. Special education is definitely the field to work in nowadays if you are getting into education. With all due respect, secure a job first...then move.

Rent in Monroe County seems to be nearly double that for a 2 bedroom. I looked into renting before buying, and none would accept my dogs. Stupid breed restrictions.
