Does anyone know of a church collecting clothing in the My. Pocono area? I know there is the Goodwill store but I would prefer to give to a church. Thank you in advance.

I think the Salvation Army has a location in Mt Pocono. They have one in East Stroudsburg, where we donate occasionally.

Going west on Route 940 turn right on Summit Ave. one third of a mile after Lowes. It is immediately on your right side. They have large collection boxes outside for clothing and shoes. Other items, in good working order (furniture and some small appliances can be brought into the store.

Thank you for the information. I was hoping to find a church etc so items would be given and not sold.

Salvation Army is a church (some people don't realize that) and the items they sell are offered at very reasonable prices. The people who shop for clothing at "Sally's" are almost all very needy, and the money raised goes back into the Army's programs.

Our church in Stroudsburg holds their annual flea market each summer, and the donated clothes are sold, but at very reasonable prices, and the money goes to run programs like the soup kitchen and other ministries. Some unsold clothing is donated to another group, but I don't know the details about that. Donated clothing that is simply unsalable (and there's more of that than you would think) is sold by the pound to a rag dealer.

A word of caution about some of those random donation boxes you see around: Many of them are run by for-profit companies that only donate pennies on the dollar to charity.

My uncle was a Sally for decades. Played in the band, too.

When my mom died, I donated to Catholic Charities, among other places. My niece hauled the things off, so I don't know their locations.

The Salvation Army does fine things for people in need. They have a church with services like any other. They have a program to rehab alcoholics/drug dependents. When used items (and clothing) are donated, they pay the sorters and taggers a salary; generally down-on-their luck people who may otherwise be unemployable. The stores are staffed by paid employees, thus making jobs for people. The items they offer are generally priced well (although not always) so low income people can afford them. The money the SA makes in their stores goes to fund their many humanitarian projects.

Sally's seem to actually help many more people than we imagine.

All of this talk and it reminds me that we have a bag or two for them. I'll get it ready this morning and drop it off.

At one time we used to use them for a tax deduction. Now they have raised the limits so high that it doesn't pay to itemize unless you have many thousands of dollars to give away. However, if you do have a lot and can take advantage of itemizing; they will still stamp your forms. I would think that it might be wise to make a photographic record of all that you donate just incase the IRS wants to single you out.

Haven't against the S.A. and I know their efforts help many but often the benefits go into the big machine. That may be where I end up, but I was hoping to find a charity that kept everything local. I will look up Catholic Charties and take a photo - great suggestions.

My wife's cousins are long time Officers in the Army..Here in Upstate NY and Puerto Rico..
believe me, what they do is just incredible..so much time and energy invested.

The Salvation Army pretty much has a long standing and pretty much an impeccible reputation.
