My husband and I are relocating to the Scranton area so, we don't know much about it. However, we fell in love with a rental property in the Hill Section...and then we saw Trulia's crime map. We have been warned that this area is heavy with college students which, since we are young, this isn't something that we are terribly concerned about. We've also driven through the neighborhood at a few different times (once at night) and, it doesn't seem sketchy... How concerned should we be? Especially since there is only on-street parking (something we are not used to), I'm not sure if I should be worried..

College students? Not too much. You can hurt them if you want to. The college and the police try to be on them. If that doesn't work, it's PA. Find a solution.

Edit. Their parents don't want the fine.

I suggest visiting a local supermarket or pharmacy in the area and asking the employee's there about the area...obviously ask young and old alike so you get a pretty good rounded opinion of what it's really like to the locals....either of those two locations should give you a good start....don't ask at the Drunkin Donuts or fast food joints cuz that's where some of the college kids may be employed and of course they'll tell you otherwise....

LOL, true dat. The two big colleges in town, U of S and Marywood, are mainly for middle class kids and are not known as "party schools". Not to say they are 100% angels but there is a lot of studying going on.

In these neighborhoods it's a block by block question.

Some of the "crime" in this area may comes from Lackawanna U.... it is a different crowd, and some of their students see the other schools students as "opportunity", and there is a new crop every year...just sayin'.

Generally, many folks won't want to live in the high student rental area where more houses are owned by out of state investment/income focussed landlords. The noise, commotion etc. become more annoying over time, rather than the crime per se. Even if you think it's "OK" now, your opinion may change in a few years.

The following article may have some contact info etc.

Police, residents hope to stop crime in Scranton's Hill Section - News - The Times-Tribune

Good luck...let us know how it works out if you get a chance.
