Lots of negative posts about the Pocono region, lake areas etc. I go to Hawley/Walenpaupack/Honesdale at least once a month for years. I like the area, like the people, like the convenience of shopping, medical care nearby.
Taxes are 1/3-1/2 what they are here in Sussex county NJ. Lots of less traffic (Oxymoron?) than I'm used to.
Go a mile or two north of Honesdale and your in God's country.
I'm retired, don't need to work anymore. Can anyone point out the negatives of relocating to this area?

well we had a house near hawley we we were going to retire to but after 5 years of part time life we decided not to retire in the pocono's .

for starters there is no decent public transportation system if you can't drive

we live in queens in nyc so to us medical facilities are very sparse , same thing with specialists .

no where to really work a bit if i wanted except at very low pay .

winters are long and cold .

really not much to do once the walk in the woods or around the lake grow stale .

we realized everything we would want in retirement was already right here in queens so we sold the house

People are different. There are country people and city people and I'm sure take it or leave it type of people. The woods never get old for me. I live in the woods now and wouldn't have it any other way. I prefer animals to people, woods to cities.
I like the cold winters with a wood stove. I like when the sky is gun-steal grey in the fall and winter. I like friendly, respectful people who say 'hello" or 'good morning" etc.
Putting me in the city is just pure torture.

I'm looking around the Honesdale area via Sussex County too.
Any suggestions on which streets/area to avoid flooding?

So... Ive pretty much decided on this area as well. Not interested in Monroe County. Will continue to look at the lower part of the state around Harrisburg, but I think I like the idea of being more north and rural better.

Thing is, before our original move to VA, I was looking at this area briefly when we decided to leave NY.

Im 48,have a pension but will prob try to find something to do part time. May look into working from home so decent internet will be a must.

Dont mind a weekly drive to stores. I freeze dry, dehydrate and store alot of food, so Ill be fine for times when weather keeps me trapped.

Would love to find 5+ acres.
Not ready to go now, but will be keeping a eye out.
