Retire to the Poconos ?
........ I retired in 2007 & am seriously contemplating retiring to the Poconos. As such, the availability of Jobs or Schools is not an issue to me.---- I am concerned with the availability of good Health Care services in as much as my retirement was necessitated by my having sustained an on-the-job injury which has left me with disabling health care issues. Additionally, my severely handicapped adult step-son lives with my wife ( his mother ) & I.----- Having said that , I am looking for a good area to retire to in the Poconos where I could buy a ranch style house from a good builder ?? ---- Can anyone suggest a good area to retire to in the Poconos ? ---- Can anyone suggest a good builder in the Poconos ? ---- Does anyone know of any Pocono builders who specialize in building homes for retirees ? ---- Lastly, to what extent are Health Care services available in the Poconos ? -----Thanks

to tell you the truth unless i was very close to a major hospital i wouldnt consider nepa if i was in poor health. although we plan to retire there full time eventually, compared to major cities health related facilities are few. everything requires travel from most areas. even getting an ambulance can be tough. there was a car crash in our development in tafton last week. it took 25 minutes for an ambulance to respond. i know from where we are in tafton wayne memorial hospital can be a 25-30 minute ride, not exactly short in a life threatning instance . other than that we love it!

I wouldn't say that for all of NE PA. I live in Scranton, and have 3 hospitals within a mile or two from my house.
If you live in the Poconos, unless you live in the Stroudsburg area, of course you will be far from hospitals and health care. Its a rural area.

I think the Scranton area would be great for this poster. Because of the three hospitals.
There is also a Geisinger Hospital I think more towards Wilkes barre. A huge VA hospital in Wilkes Barre too. Plus, the cost of a home is less, and the taxes are certainly less then in Monroe Cty.

If you focus on the bear creek area you will be close to geisinger which has state of the art facilities. There are other hospitals around, but I think if I needed to go to a hospital frequently that is where i'd want to be.

i think also you need to look at your tolerance of cold also. we run consistantly 10-12 degrees cooler all winter than we do in nyc. i have both weatherbugs at all time on my computer. i think eventually we will have 2 places when we retire with a place to escape the harsh winters as we get older

Thats exactly how I feel.........Winters can be quite brutal in Pa. I love snow and skiing......but......lots of snow and ice is a big bunch of hard work.
(PS thats why we head to SC in the winter.....people were swimming today in the ocean)

Welcome to the forum. Stay away from any health care at Newton Memorial Hospital located in Sussex County. We now travel to NYC and Westchester County for health care. That is something to keep in mind. The other forum members who suggested the Scranton area where you are close to three pretty good hospitals - or Geisinger is good advice. Wallenpaupack Custom Builders is highly recommended. They are great people and are very busy currently building about 10 houses. Depending on the seriousness of health issue, I would position myself close to these areas. You may want to check out the services that you and your adult step son require before making the major move. Good luck.
