I tend to think last year's police lockdown of the parade was a little excessive. I didn't get drunk at all and left early in the afternoon (I never have fun really at those things), but if you showed the slightest hint of public intoxication, the police arrested you. I can see arresting people who fight, urinate in public, etc. But they seemed to go far beyond that. It seemed to cause more problems than it prevented.

I've been to both and there is NO WAY Scranton's parade even comes close to comparing to NYC's.

Commish wasn't Hillary at the last parade? Why would the city allow itself to viewed by a national audience for what it really is, when it could lock it down and force everyone to act they way they wanted them to.
If I remember correctly last year Northern Lights and Boccardo jewelers had their windows smashed as well.
I choose to work at my church's ham and cabbage dinner on parade day, better example to set for my son and I feel alot better the next day.

Read the site and weep. statistics dont lie. I may hate our mayor and city for that matter..but this day is what makes scranton shine. My question still stands...Why not leave the party goers alone? there are rapists and murders on the streets of scranton...but people are worried about drunks. unreal.

Scranton is the second..participants per population of the city. It is a good parade like I said. But there is no way it beats NYC, Chicago, or Boston.

Listen I have been to few parades in my day, but it still is not what I would like to see our city known for. If the city and its various groups would spend half the time promoting the city like they do this ONE DAY then maybe we wouldn't be in half the trouble we are.
Leaving the party goers alone might have played out when we were younger but the kids are different now and smashing windows out of a downtown business is not what I would of expected in the past but obviously these kids cannot handle themselves.
This will continue to grow I'm sure, but so will the problems with it. I still don't think that we need to be seen as a city of drunken irish wannabees, not to mention that St. Patrick was freakin welsh.

Hopefully they do "lockdown" the drunks again this year for the parade....it was finally something you can take your kids to and not worry about putting up with drunks stumbling around and causing trouble. But, I have a feeling that was all because of Hillary's appearance last year, and it might be back to the boozefest that it usually is...

Makes Scranton shine? I realize that murders and rape are worse than public drunkenness, but you don't just ignore these things and only worry about murderers and rapists. And how can you say for sure that there are definitely murderers and rapists on the loose in Scranton? I really don't think that public drunkenness makes Scranton shine....I think it makes a mockery of my Irish heritage. This day is about celebrating St. Patrick spreading Christianity to Ireland...not drinking until you puke. Having a few beers is great....drinking them until you act like a jackass is not.
I think Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter's quote on celebrating in Philly after the Phils won the series is appropriate here..."You can be joyous, but you cannot be a jackass."

I don't live in Scranton, but I'll tell you that I will not go to Scranton's parade because of it's reputation as being a big, drunken, nut house on parade day. I do enjoy a few beers now and then, but I can't imagine standing in an endless line packed in like sardines for an hour to wait for a 10 oz. beer. Plus, too many drunken college kids causing ruckass. It just doesn't seem like it would be a good time from my point of view, and what I've heard about it. I could see why it would appeal to a college aged kid, but as a person with a wife and kids, I just wouldn't think it was a good idea to take them there.
