Default Dunno...

My gf and I stopped at the casino last year, just out of curiosity. The place was very busy. We spent ten minutes there, and continued on our way. I keep my money and invest it in things other than slots. I grew up in a family of gamblers.

Here is MS report...

I haven't been there but I have heard from others that they saw LOTS of really down-and-out looking people feeding the one-armed bandits at Mohegan Sun. I have a feeling a lot of people are losing their shirts with casinos right in our backyard. And a lot of them are the old ladies who also gripe about not being able to afford their prescriptions and heat, yet go "down da casino" to dump all their money into the slots....then on the way home they go and pick up their daily "lott-tree" tickets. Then they go home and fill out a LIHEAP application because they supposedly can't afford their heat bill.

Not my thing. Checked it out for 20 minutes out of curiosity; hard to get near the inexpensive machines; ended up losing $10. Being there makes me feel like I have a pinball machine in my head. No thanks....... ding, ding ding!

I'll stick with wooden roller coasters for my thrills. Money well spent......

I actually like the casino. I live practically within walking distance of it, and I've been there four times now since turning 21 in November 2007. I limit myself to $20 per visit, and I usually end up losing it all. However, I put $10 into a machine a few weeks ago and came out with $17. What big spenders we starving college nerds are!

It's not the casino's fault if people become addicted any more than it's a bar's fault if someone turning 21 celebrates their birthday there and develops an addiction to alcohol after tasting an amaretto sour. It's also not a fast food restaurant's fault if Chubby McButterPants decides to grab two Big-Macs everyday for the rest of his life due to sheer gluttony and develops heart disease or diabetes. We have to start making people responsible for their own actions instead of always looking to point the finger elsewhere. I don't know of one person who is "addicted" to Mohegan Sun, and I know of roughly a dozen people who visit the site about once per month, as I do.

I think the casino has been a boon moreso than a burden. I see more and more out-of-state license plates along the Highway 315 corridor now during my daily commutes, and these are people who will not only patronize the casino but whom may also fill up at our service stations, dine at our restaurants, stay at our hotels, check out our tourist attractions, etc. Administrator Mike Revitt of Wilkes-Barre Township claims that the casino has boosted crime by 40% in his township, but I know that's just hysteria and sour grapes.

Does the casino have their own restaurants and hotel? I get the impression that people really don't leave the casino much once they get there to go site seeing in the area, I am sure some do but I suspect most don't. So if the casino has a restaurant or two and a hotel, the area business really is not going to see that crowd.

As of right now the casino just has a little cheesy cafeteria area, but they're rapidly expanding it to include shopping, dining, etc. on-site with a new complex that should be open next year. If Luzerne County was smart they'd also lease space in there for a small visitors' center staffed with an employee and filled with all sorts of helpful brochures, a county gift shop, etc. in hopes of encouraging all of these tourists to stimulate the economy outside of the casino as well.

Although, I agree that would be a great plan but not sure the casino would agree to those terms. I get the impression they really like to keep those profits for themselves; "in house" so to speak. Like my huband says, who likes to visit a casino now and again, "They don't build these great, beautiful buildings by losing money."

The last girl I dated worked as an Indian-casino auditor for an accountant firm based in NV. She told me the payouts differ based on machine placement and game-type. So, machines placed near the door pay out more frequently but lesser in amount whereas the machines on the floor pay out less frequently but more in amount. They're all supposed to average out to the same payout over the long run. Among game types, the poker machines have the best odds because there's a human element of skill involved (not just random computations of a computer).

This is likely different for non-Indian run casinos as they may be required to have the same payouts on every machine regardless of placement or type.

I don't gamble.

Default Neighborhood by Mohegan Sun

My husband and I and some friends are attending a concert at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Was wondering if I could get a little feedback on the surrounding neighborhood. After looking up crime rates there we are a little apprehensive about the trip. We made reservations for the Extended Stay Hotel and was planning on walking to the concert and back after a little time spent at the casino. Thoughts?
