When I was a kid, we used to go to Hymie the butcher at the corner of Grant and Coal. He was old school. He had one cutting board, set of knives and a slicer for the jews, and another one for the others.

He could source anything. We got lamb leg from him a couple of times. His cousin from New York probably drove it in.

Scranton hill section has a noticeable Jewish community, a JCC and downtown Scranton has Abes Kosher Deli. I cannot speak to Wilkes Barre Jewish population. I also second the Lehigh Valley over Nepa. It's more diverse.

Yeah, the Christians. You could slice cheese, wipe the slicer blade, then slice beef. You didn't do that on the Kosher side.

Not Jewish, but BrianTroutman and ElijahAstin got the important points--particularly Mr. Astin's comment on Clarks Summit in Lackawanna County, about ten miles north of Scranton. The quality of life in Clarks Summit (or Waverly) is excellent; when I worked at Scranton's JCC, the most active members came from Clarks Summit, even though the Jewish population within walking distance of the JCC is considerable. Federal agencies and courts are in Scranton (and state agencies as well); Clarks Summit is also a hop, skip, and jump to I-84 and New York.

It has been very sad to see the decline in all the "Greatest Generation" institutions that once made Wilkes-Barre, also known as Wyoming Valley, so much lovelier than Scranton. I sat at a traffic light the other day lamenting the condition of a particular temple in Kingston and remembering this particular "Mad Men" era architectural beauty before the Jewish community became smaller due to elders dying and children leaving. I wish this weren't the case, but it is--and not only for the Jewish community.

Scranton and particularly Clarks Summit, on the other hand, have maintained a more cheerful and optimistic mood that would not feel as, frankly, depressing as Wilkes-Barre/Dallas does.

Best wishes. One of my nicest memories of last autumn was strolling Kirby Park, in Kingston (Wilkes-Barre area) and coming upon a Jewish youth group, most likely Orthodox, having a picnic. Their dress, comportment, and lack of deafening sound systems made me stand and watch as if fifty years hadn't passed, and I was watching kids from 1965. I inferred from what you wrote that you're not Orthodox.

Can anyone give me more information about entertainment, things to do at nights and on the weekends for young couples in 20s and early 30s around the Dallas, Wilkes Barre area? Places to meet new people around 20s-30s age range?
