Litterbugs are big fat pigs! I used to volunteer in high school to collect litter along Oak Street in Pittston Township, a very heavily-traveled roadway that links U.S. Route 11 to State Highway 315, and the volume of trash we picked up was always mind-boggling. Don't people in NEPA have any pride in their community? Is it really THAT much of an inconvenience to keep your trash in your car until you get home and then deposit the waste into your garbage can?

Scranton has at least one. It sits parked on Fig St. Rarely moves.

I agree Paul. Are people that lazy and not caring to not throw their trash out in the proper receptacles? It is mind-boggling that their are so many pigs out there.

Why is this? Don't we pay taxes for basic services? To me, street cleaning is a basic service that needs to be performed in a city. Then again, if people weren't slobs, we wouldn't need it anyway. The point is, why pay money for a street cleaner if you're never going to use it.

Not really even sure if it's the city's or not, although I imagine it is. It does move, occasionally; it's not there gathering dust. Completely. More often than not, from what I can tell, it's parked. That said, is street sweeping, on a routine basis, really an expectation? Speaking for myself, I've been wanting my street swept only after seeing the idle machine. I don't necessarily expect it as a basic service, although it'd be nice...

As long as we're in a thread like this, I'd like to see more citizens with plow packages show some initiative to step up and help their neighbors more in the winter, rather than waiting for thh city to get around to it and without having to be contracted out. Chances are, the gratitude would be demonstrated with a 10 spot, and that'd add up. More than that, it would show that someone in that position took pride in their neighborhood. Honestly, how long does it take to plow a block or two? Drives me batty seeing neighbors with their plows up while I'm taking to the street with a plastic orance shovel.

For what it's worth though CHS89, that's not a problem that's isolated specifically to Scranton. During the Valentine's Day Blizzard of 2007 we waited for three days before a plow truck finally made a pass through our part of the township, and by that time I was already working up a sweat trying to shovel out fire hydrants, neighbors' vehicles, and yes, even the roadway! I'm not accusing you of this, but I know some of your city counterparts have this uncanny ability to blame all of government's and society's ills exclusively on the city when they are just as prevalent here in the 'burbs too.

The last part was a simply a general observation. No need to read a slight into it. It was not intended to be presented as specific to Scranton. I'm sure it happens all over, but I live in Scranton, so I speak as a Scranton resident. I won't speak for anyone other than myself. That's your gig. If my counterparts agree with my opinion, fine. If not, I'll sleep well just the same.

Imagine how great this area would be if people just simply considered their next door neighbors, rather than pointing fingers. Kind of like the movie Play it Forward. That alone would make the area infinitely better.

I agree with on the snow plowing part. If someone in your neighborhood has a plow on their truck, they should help out the other neighbors by doing it for them. I know if I had one, I'd help out in this regard. Why wait for the city to never come and do it.

We have a neighbor that plows in front of our houses and during the Valentines Day storm he actually had the construction company he works for drop off a huge front loader and he dug out our area. Every house had a empty spot in front and he was able to move the plow piles and dump them down in the empty field. I bought him a case of beer and I'm sure the other neighbors did.

Street sweepers, the city has at least 2 and they have been working hard in certain areas. Court street and diamond ave where Hillary's family is from was done a few weeks ago around the parade day time. N. Washington ave in the 1700 block was just cleaned for President Bill. I just saw one in Providence Square this morning driving around also. They dump the trash and dirt in a spot down here were the DPW stores its fill dirt.

I'll check the DPW facility over the weekend.
