Ed most certainly isn't an idiot. Sure, he may be a Rangers fan, but that doesn't necessarily imply that he exercises poor judgment ALL the time! LOL!
What I would like to know though is why he hates Scranton so much. If you think paying $600,000 for a typical home on Long Island is so much better, then enjoy! All of my college peers make fun of me for wanting to have a dream life in Scranton, but I'll be the one laughing all the way to the bank. Why? As CPAs they might start out earning $55,000 in New York City to my $40,000 in Scranton, but the cost-of-living MORE than devours that $15,000 differential. Going by the general rule of thumb that you should devote no more than 1/3 of your income to housing, then I can afford to purchase a home valued at around $120,000 in the city of Scranton---I can definitely find a fixer-upper in the Lower Hill with some good old bones for that price. For my peers multiply the $55,000 by three and you get $165,000. What can that get you in Greater NYC? Nothing! Zilch! Nada! Zippo! BADA-BING-BADA-BOOM! No offense meant to you, Ed, but if I can't afford to purchase a home in Greater NYC as a CPA, then how are you planning to afford one? Scranton most certainly isn't nearly as bad as Fay, Les, Joe, and the others make it out to sound.
Thanks for responding. I have been looking in all the papers (I'm not picky at this point, don't care which town/county In which I live. 70% of the properties have major damage (holes in wall, broken windows, etc) 10% are in a dangerous neighborhood. I keep hearing that "move in ready" in the neighborhoods that keep up their property are all word of mouth....... so i am still searching.. getting desperate at this point!!!!! Thanks for the info about city data classifieds... will try them next
to the person from Florida, I came from Sarasota, FL. before you leave better take some pictures of the sun, as you rarely see it here!!!! Also be sure that you take lots of warm socks, umbrellas, and galoshes. Be sure you get used to car horns beeping..... it is as common as sneezing here. Make sure your skin is tough and you don't mind curious glares, lots of personal questions from various realtors and landlords (such as why do two people want three bedrooms, or why do two people need so much space). Last but certainly not least. expect things to be so much different that you hardly recognize the place, if you have lived here before. I wish you luck in your return here as you will need it.
If it's really so bad in Ed's eyes, then I have no idea why he bothered coming here in the first place or why he continues to stay. It's been five or six years already. If someone moves to a place that makes them so miserable and continues to stay there for another five years, it doesn't really refelct well on the intelligence or initiative of that person, does it?

Where in my post did I say that I was so miserable or that it was SO bad here? I didn't. I didn't bash Scranton. I have complained about Scranton on this forum in the past. I'm unhappy with certain aspects of this city, much like people who have lived here all their lives. It's not perfect. Nor did I say Long Island, where I'm originally from, is a utopia either. You have to take the good with the bad and that's what I'm doing. Like Dan has stated, even Paul too, that this city has potential. We need new people in government. Whether you like Doherty or not, and you know I don't, it's time for some new blood in there. We need someone with a different vision for the city. In my opinion Doherty has been in there too long and is getting stale. I think the mayor's term should be only 2 terms much like the President. Lord knows everyone wants Bush out of the White House and I feel the same about Doherty. It is time for him to move on and let someone else guide Scranton to a little bit better of a future. No, I don't necessarily mean Janet Evans. So just because I stay in Scranton does not make me an idiot. Maybe I'm waiting for the city to get better or maybe I can't afford to move right now, but no need to attack me personally. But like MrKrabs has stated, if there is something wrong with your city it's all right to complain to try and make it better and not hide your head in the sand. I don't hate Scranton, I'm just not that thrilled about it's current state.

Paul, I'm not planning to purchase one there either. I would love to go back, but like you stated, I simply can't afford one there with the current taxes and prices of homes. I do plan on eventually buying a house maybe in Wayne county or someplace with some land. But more than likely it will not be in Scranton.

i'm telling what i am experiencing-----if it sounds bad to you poster--then it is---this is MY reality of my return to nepa after being away for many years!----why does it bother some people--i only post what i have experienced
I drove through downtown yesterday (April 5) and the blight is as others have said....boarded up storefronts, for rent signs, and the roads are awful too!
I agree...I wonder what ever happened to the plan to establish a trail along the river stretching from Carbondale to Old Forge? I know there's section in Archbald and Peckville and a section in Scranton...but I've heard nothing else of plans for expansion. When I lived "up da line" I used to walk that trail from Archbald to Peckville, then over the bridge to the park in Olyphant all the time.
Hey came across this, I would like the river trails to like the concept one here:
Welcome to Scranton Tomorrow! (broken link)
I hope that the powers that be find a way to actually develop the riverfront like this plan for the Lackawanna.
