Et tu, Brute?
Please stop reading only the words you want to read.
The business itself was never described as "nondescript", just the building. And by definition, it is. It's a square box. That's it. No fancy brick or masonrywork, no tin cielings, no elaborate woodwork, like some of other buildings you've posted pictures of might display. It's just cinderblock walls in the shape of a box. What's "descript" about that?

I wouldn't go as far as to say that Scranton's downtown is beautiful. That I don't see. Scranton does have some nice neighborhoods that are appealing though. I never would use "beautiful" to describe the downtown though. Sorry Paul.

I would call Scranton's downtown beautiful, the historical significance of the buildings is great. The downtown is on an upswing and the blight issues are being addressed every day in every section of the city.

What city do you live in? Sure there are some beautiful buildings. I'll give you that, but give them time and they'll tear them down.
Follow the yellow brick potholed road, follow the yellow brick potholed road
Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow the yellow-brick potholed road
Follow the yellow-brick, follow the yellow-brick
Follow the yellow-brick potholed road
You're off to see the Mayor, the Wonderful Mayor of Oz
You'll find he is a Whiz of a Mayor if ever a Wiz there was
If ever, oh ever, a Wiz there was the Mayor of Oz is one because
Because, because, because, because, because
Because of the wonderful things he thinks does
You're off the see the Mayor, the Wonderful Mayor of Oz
Just be careful because if the mayor stops short you might have to get your head removed by a doctor from his a$$. Upswing.....The city of Scranton is close to a half of billion in long term debt. The debt is from the last 7 years and the last 7 years alone. We are going to need one hell of a upswing to get that back down. I love it, they put up a smoke screen and a facade and you sheep fall for it everytime. Look at the numbers, there is no upswing, there is only a spiral downward out of financial control. But hey its an election year.

Dan, I guess a lot of people really do believe we live in Oz. I guess my glasses are fading, I need new ones colored in rose.
Let's be real here. I'm not saying that the downtown looks like war torn Baghdad, but it certainly is not charming or beautiful. I just don't get that sense when I'm walking downtown. I don't feel an overwhelming sense of depression either. I just feel nothing for it, blah, I guess.

Yes the city is on an upswing, Blight issues are being addressed daily, vacant buildings are being torn down, lackawanna avenue is being revitalized, but I forgot you think we should just leave it alone, let the buildings crumble, and not do a thing about it. Yes, your attitude is really how the pride should be restored.Right?

Have any of you even LOOKED at my photos of Pittston? That's the way the vast majority of the town looks---collapsing into the street, overgrown, and replete with white-trash. It's an entire 180-degree difference once you cross the bridge from gorgeous West Pittston into slummy Pittston. As such, it should NOT come as any surprise to any of you why I envy Scranton's "beauty" so much. When you come from a cess pool, even an average city with average problems seems like utopia. It's too late for Pittston to make a comeback given how much of its history has already been torn down in the name of "progress." However, it is most certainly NOT too late to resurrect Scranton.

Paul, I see what you're saying when you compare Scranton to Pittston. Overall Scranton is more appealing than Pittston. But there are some areas of Scranton that do look like those pics of Pittston. I said SOME, not ALL. As far as Scranton being beautiful, I still wouldn't describe the downtown that way to someone from out of town. A beautiful city that comes to mind is San Antonio, TX. With it's River Walk and other attractions, when I visited there, I thought that it was a beautiful looking city.

NYRanger, San Antonio and Scranton are two different types of cities, San Antonio has its fair share of problems as well as delapidated ghetto areas. Sure there are areas of Scranton that need to be improved, hence why SouthSide is getting much attention, it is an area in dire need of imporvements and demolition. However, the downtown is a historic atmosphere in which a different sense of beauty can be established. Comparing San Antonio to Scranton is not really a fair comparison, as the climate region of the country has much to do with the type of city atomosphere that can be achieved. Scranton has its' own atmosphere, whcih I would say would be historic buildings in the downtown, beautiful 19th century homes in greenridge and the hill, and most of all great people all over the city.

cgraz1187, I hear what you're saying and respect your opinion. I guess I just don't see it in the same light as you do. I guess that's what makes the world go 'round. We all see things in a different way. So, we'll agree to disagree on Scranton's beauty.
