I'm here for 1-2 wks to help my mum set up her apt. Here's what I'm hoping to find:

1. A market to find good ribeye beef. I've been to Gerrity's & Price Chopper & although the latter has good quality everything else, their beef selection is scant & not the freshest... I also haven't found ribeye in either store, even at the meat case. Someone mentioned Wegman's. Haven't been yet... is that my best bet? Or, is there a local butcher?

2. Car waxing. I don't want a drive through wash but a hands on wash & wax... it's been 2-yrs, so I need a thorough waxing, interior cleaning & with all the moving & unpacking I'm doing, I simply don't have the energy or time to do it myself. Yelp reviews are too old to bother trusting. Any place the locals prefer?

3. I see that Abe's Hotdogs is still open. Haven't been there for 25-yrs. Still the same? Has anyone been in awhile?

Thank you very much.

Wegmans is pretty good but if you don't mind the drive you may find a better selection at Schiff's

Thanks, CK. I'll try Wegman's first... since it's closer, but I'll check it out.

Default Another local q?

I'd like to walk with my mum while here so she can get a bit of exercise, but the broken sidewalks, as well as regular inclines & declines make it a bit tough for her for a number of reasons, mainly, she's got a balance problem.

When I was here 25-yrs ago, there was a place I would run daily, on a track I was told was made of recycled rubber or something similar. If I'm not mistaken it was Kirby Pk or a nearby highschool which allowed the public to use their track. All I recall is there was a lot of competitive off-street parking available & next to the track was a football field, which if I recall, highschoolers were using. Since it was 25-yrs ago, the track might not even exist anymore, I suppose.

Am I right in thinking it's Kirby or, is there anywhere else we would be able to walk that's a flat surface/track where mum won't take a tumble?

Thank you again.

I haven't been to Abe's on Main St. in decades, so I can't help you with that. I did go to the one on Barney St. in 2013, but I didn't have a hot dog. The food was decent, but I wouldn't go out of my way for anything other than the hot dog. There are a lot of memories attached to those dogs.

You should be able to find a good steak at Wegmans. I'm impressed with the quality of their meat, seafood, and produce. I've never gotten anything bad from there.

Kirby Park would be a good place to walk. There is a track, but there's a large flat area of lawn. Mom used to like to go to the pavilion by the pond and the playground to watch the children play. The football field is Ralston Field* At least in used to be Ralston Field. I remember going to a couple of games there in the 1960s. My brother went to Wilkes.

Does the OP mean the County of Luzerne or the Borough of Luzerne?

I also recommend Schiff's Cash and Carry on North Main Ave. in Scranton for wholesale prices on cryopak beef like ribeyes and strips. Schiff's carries ungraded and choice beef. I've never seen whole cryopaks at Wegmans and you don't get wholesale prices there.

Yes, indeed. Haven't had them since a kid. We might as well visit once, since I'm only here for such a short time. There's also a food truck/stand outside Lowe's on Northampton, which I'm sure my mum would like for a steak 'n cheese one day.

That's great & easy to get to. I was hoping to find a local butcher, but maybe they're not as prevalent here as in New England cities, which is fine... just haven't been here in so long, I forget what's available & so many businesses we've passed look closed down. My mum kept insisting the 2 shops across the street from her house were closed... they do look closed down... old bldgs, always dark, no one coming in or out... but, I called & they're both open for biz. I've lived in big cities for too long... forgot there aren't throngs of folks milling about 24/7 in smaller towns.

This is perfect, thank you Gerania. I'm loving being here at this time with the beautiful trees... cherry blossom trees? She'll love the park, so this weekend, I'll bring mum for a walk. Thank you for the link.

Thank you. Scranton is a bit of a drive, since I'm only here for a couple of wks. And, mum's freezer is full... the ribeye is for me, since that's all I eat at the moment. I'll try Wegman's... if I can't find what I need, then I'll head up to Schiff's.

If you mean the Borough of Luzerne, the Back Mountain Rail Trail begins on Parry St. and extends for 5 miles. It's flat and a lovely peaceful walk. You can park near the entrance.

Wegmans butchers will cut delmonico steaks (rib eye) to your specifications and they also carry individual cryopak steaks.

If you like rib eye steaks, you might want to buy a whole ribeye at Schiff's and take it back home with you in an ice chest. See photo of their meat case.

For closer to Luzerne, Fetch's Market on the Ave (rte 11) in Wyoming. It's just north of sixth st.

Forty Fort has a small park on the Ave and the walkways are smooth and level. A nice little stroll and benches to rest.
