Exactly Dan. My parents didn't move to the area 20 years ago from Long Island because they longed for the NEPA lifestyle. They moved here because the taxes were cheaper and they could buy more house and land for less money than on the Island. Now they regret it because they found out there are no good jobs or major industry in NEPA and now they can't go back.

I have lived in NEPA for the first 25 years of my life and the last 20 in the suburbs of a "big city". I have always had a love-hate feeling toward NEPA. I had a somewhat nice childhood but when I graduated from college there wasn't a job to be found in my field so I couldn't wait to leave. After living where I am, I couldn't imagine anyone moving to NEPA for the schools, quality of life, or to get away from druggies or gangsters. I remember the area as having a huge drug problem , quite a few sleazy criminals, and my high school was horrible. I have heard that not much has changed, as I have relatives that work in the school system and in law enforcement. I wish that I felt different about my hometown, but whenever I do visit, the topic of conversation is always either how bad the area is, or from the more optimistic, how the area is up and coming. I've been hearing this for twenty years, so I am not sure if the big change will ever come. I now live in a small town outside a big city and I have the best of both worlds, plus my kids are in one of the top 1% school districts in the country. I'm sure many have had great experiences in NEPA and that's great. Just isn't for me.

Really, Wilkes Barre is beautiful........seeing the mountains in the backdrop of the city area, quite awesome!
Its just the way it is so nestled into the valley, with the mountains reaching high at all of its edges.
One can go shopping at Penneys, Pier One, TJMax, Michaels,Lowes........then head on home to Harveys Lake, or a nice home in the mountains that surround. You have lakes, mountains, and every store you need.......your blessed.
Plus, I saw a nice hospital, and one of the only veterans hospitals around which is huge. Some good local vets, and all the other services you need.
Just look at that Arena, and all it brings to the community.
I'd not care to listen to a man who visits once and makes some grand statement of class........or unkindness.
The area is a place to enjoy and hold dear, from what I can see.
The sun shining on the town, the mountains, the buildings......it was just beautiful
Yes, it is an old, old, town........but........I see much that is new and improved.
I think Wilkes Barre should be proud of its improvements, and continue on its growning path. Who cares, what a man at CNN has to say about it.......
I'd like to take him on a walk with me.......
Wonderful Post, Thank you

Ummm...hello I did not move here ONLYbecause it is cheap...hello family first? FYI, I still brag about loving it here to my friends and family on the island, even though I have been told to go back to NY by a few of my friendlier fellow Scrantonians...

P.s. My son loved the fishing torunie! Thanks

ya know what weluvpa and ranger, your parents might have needed to find a cheap place to live 20 years ago, and so they chose nepa, however please speak for yourself. Most of the people I know (I am in Pike county) moved here to give their families a better life. My parents retired to our summer home in 1979, from Long Island. The reason had nothing at all to do with money, it had to do with quality of life. Nicer people, cleaner area, good fishing, hunting and friendships. I have raised my children here, and compared to the children of my relatives else where, my kids are doing great, and they have good manners. So I feel what you should have said was "in my case, my family needed to find a less expensive place to live so they chose nepa"

My post was my case, not anyone else's. This was the reason we moved here. Other people have other reasons. In hindsight if we had to do it again, we probably would of stayed on the Island.
