I have not been back to Nanticoke for a few years, but enjoyed the pictorial of various sights in the town... including the library, the building where Dr. Abbott had his office, Nanticoke Hospital, and the scary hills if you are driving a milk truck. Starting out in Nanticoke and Hanover Twp led me to a medical career in Boston, MA. Best wishes to the old town and all those still there.

My mom took me to Dr. Abbott when I was a baby. I remember his office being across the street from St. Francis Church. I grew up in Nanticoke. Those scarry hills were great for sleighriding! But a nightmare driving home from work when it snowed.

There was an Upper Askam school and a Lower Askam school. Kids from Loomis Park went to Lower Askam school. Both schools have been torn down.

Yes, Dr. Abbott moved his office from Main Street on the second floor of a building next to the State theater, to a small stand alone building next to his home near St. Francis Church.

Hi,
I was not born in Nanticoke, actually born&raised in Hunlock Creek up from Rummage's Park/Palace Park. My Fathers family is from Nanticoke,Alden Station, Polander Hill. I spent a lot of time at my Grandmother's in the early 60's. I think I was 5or6 and remember going down to the park(across from Alden Furs) around Christmas to see Santa. One of my Aunt&Uncles still had a little store up from the Russian Church on middle road. Celebrated every Russian Christmas there and boy was it something. All the Slovak/Russian food, tradition, celebration, etc... but that slowly ended toward the end of the 70's. What a time to remember!
I used to go to Carroll's and enjoyed it and I remember Stop& Go too..... I think!
My parents favorite radio station was in Nanticoke (WARM) and I'll always remember driving back with my Dad after archery hunting and listening to the station sign off playing Jim Reeves' Night Watch. My Mom listened to it from sunup to sundown.
Spent every summer at Sans Souci park and remember when a lady was bit by a snake in the Caterpillar ride(I think it closed soon after). Also went to Angela Park & Ghost Town. Spent most of my time at Rummages/Palace Park in Hunlock Creek as my Mom&Dad used to teach skate dancing there and I grew up playing pinball, bowling, skating, & swimming there. Remember when Sly&theFamily Stone played there? My friend and I walked down thru the woods and into the field to catch a glimpse. The people talked about that for years!
Went to Northwest HS and used to"cruise" Nanticoke when I got my license Lot of good times.
Ended up buying a property in Wanamie a few years back just up the road from the site of my Father's old school. Some of my Dad's family still live in Nanticoke or nearby.
I could go on and on. Glad I found this thread.

That is WNAK !
Also remember going with my Mom to the department store that is now the senior center across from Burger King(Carroll's). I think it was the Lazarus store. I was fascinated by the network they had to send orders & bills . It was an air tube sending the canister flying around and I think they had a series of lines on pulleys where they would attach slips and send them upstairs. I would always stand there while my Mom shopped watching those things work.
Used to go to the Theater a lot, think I saw the Towering Inferno there. When in Scouting I used to go see nature movies there.
The candy store by the square.
A pool hall by the square and the bowling alley further up.
A pizza place just down from the square that was popular in the 70's. Can't remember the name.
My barber was there across the street from the United Penn bank.
Wollworths store and many more when the downtown was flourishing.

Flyinwalenda, the candy store by the square is still thriving! It's Diamond's Chocolates. I haven't been able to convince Mr. Panagakos to sell online yet, but Sanitary Bakery - one of Nanticoke's other great calorie-sellers - has a website and they ship their pastries anywhere!

You mean Carroll's?
I worked there, in 1971. Still have my red "TRAINEE" cap.
