If you like photography & you live close to the Hudson, here's some links to places that are fantastic & are close enough for a "day drive" outing as well as a weekend "getaway" if you want to stay in a hotel or B&B....

New York State Parks :: Olana State Historic Site kinda secluded & the most "northern" of the old houses, but if you start here & work your way south down the Hudson, lots of nice scenery!!

Welcome to Lyndhurst usually have Summer concerts on the great lawn overlooking the Hudson

Historic Hudson Valley - Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate I never knew this was there, but just saw it on the Travel Channel a few weeks back...

Hudson Valley Resorts & New York State Hotel Accommodations – Mohonk Mountain House a day trip in itself (unless you're rich & can afford to stay in the hotel) with miles of hiking trails (more like strolling) & views of 5 states from the tower. This is about 15 miles from the Hudson on the west side.

I don't know if you've seen any of these already, but if you need any info as far as great photo places, I know of a few more...

Also, if you want to do a "photo weekend", a nice town to stay in that's near a lot of the mansions & close to the river is Rhinebeck. They have a fair in August which is a lot of fun also!! Rhinebeck Chamber of Commerce

For my partner's birthday I got him a 3 day trip to Savannah. We've never been there & it's only a 6 hour drive from us (it'll probably cost me more for the d*@n gas than it did for the hotel package!!). We're staying in a haunted inn on the riverfront in the historic district & maybe we'll catch a ghost on film!! (look out Ghosthunters!!!)

WOW!!!! You STAYED at Mohonk!!!???!!! Lucky you!!!

We lived about 35 miles away & I hiked up there almost every week!! I could never get myself to spend the money to actually stay there though...

Hopefully some of the NEPA residents can give you ideas there for photo trips...I'm not that familiar, having only visited family & never living there...

Well at the time I was making $8.00 an hour & at that time they allowed hikers into the hotel (I spent many times in the winter thawing my bones in front of the fireplace in the vestibule!! ) so I figured "why spend my paycheck when I can stroll through the hotel & get hot chocolate at the soda counter for free!!

I remember 1 time they closed the store I worked in 'cause it was a blizzard & I decided to drive 40 miles through the blizzard up to Mohonk to hike in the snow!! I'm glad I'm old & stupid now instead of young & stupid!!!
