But my guess would be the majority of the 1,000 or so new residents in NP moved there from Scranton and "da valley" rather than NJ.

I agree. For North Pocono to eventually lose its rural identity and become the "next South Abington" turns my stomach sour, but surely it is inevitable. I happen to think that these annual estimates are even a bit understated since the 2000 census, as I can safely say that several hundred building lots have been sold in the school district since 2000, yet only around 1,000 new residents are being reflected. The true population is probably closer to 18,500. I wish more of this growth would come to Scranton. Whether you like it or not, Dan, any residential growth in the city is good growth. Increasing the city's tax base will generate new revenues, which will, in turn, lead to a better quality-of-life for residents via improved services, better capital projects (not crony ones), a decreased individual tax burden since there will be more people paying into the kitty, and perhaps finally even raises for public safety personnel. I think between 2010 and 2020, Scranton will actually start showing annual population increases. The school district's enrollment is already growing, and South Side's population in particular is growing thanks to the Hispanic influx. As the University of Scranton continues to expand, the student population in the Lower Hill will grow. Population growth is a GOOD thing for the city, but agreed it is a BAD thing for North Pocono.
It's actually roughly a 50/50 split between others from "da valley" and people from NJ/NY judging by the property transfers for the newer subdivisions out there. |

But is all of this "influx" a good thing? The jury is still out.

The Commish was right on the money. The answer was not ambiguous. You should use a dictionary and spellcheck when posting. This is trollish...
