Howdy,
My trees are getting hammered by gypsy moth caterpillars. I'm heading to Home Depot to buy some burlap to ring the trees so I can catch 'em when they come down the tree.. Also looking to get some Safer Caterpillar Killer so I can spray. Any other methods I can employ? Kevin "Kill 'em all!" |

Don't quote me on this, but someone once told me that the only reliable way to fight them is by torching their nests. However, this also runs the risk of catching the tree on fire, so I would not recommend it unless you really know what you are doing (and are prepared to extinguish any flames before they spread). I grew up in the country and we used to have them EVERYWHERE. I used to hate when they'd drop on my head or shoulders from trees...eek!

Here at Lowe's we sell something called "Sevin" in a red bottle that supposedly works wonders on eradicating the pests. I've personally never used it (knock on wood we don't have critter problems), but I've overheard several customers rave about it to others when I'm helping someone else in an adjacent area.
We sell it in a 32 oz. spray bottle for what I believe is $6.97, a powder canister for the same price, a bottle with a direct hook-up for a garden hose sprayer, and a larger concentrate version that would be mixed with water. |

As someone in the pest business, please please please follow the directions. Please do not think that if you use double the recommended dose, it will work better ; it wont.
Sevin is good to use. Please be extra careful with it ; use the recommended gloves, and protection. I would knock down the white nests with a brush and hose the caterpillars away. I am lousy for business. d |

Check out the County you live in. Pike County has a gypsy moth spraying program. They used to come with a helicopter like MASH and spray. It is costly but to me it was worth it.
