My parents ( now deceased) were from the Carbondale/ Simpson area. I have many happy memories visiting and comsider coal country in my blood. But I'm wondering how we would be received if I came back to visit and drive around with my husband and children? He is African American and they are obviously mixed. Please doin't hold back comments - I really need to know. Family in the area says it's OK - but i don't see anyone else who's black.

On the whole I'd suggest there would be more racists in the area than you would find in any other average area but if you mind your business they will most likely mine theirs. People in the area are slowly getting over their prejudices but to put it bluntly the black community isn't being very helpful. You only need to look at the newspaper to see that. Inner city people move here to get away from the violence but it inevitably follows them here.
I'm well aware all black people aren't like that but when you have constant headlines of gang related activity and a majority of it is from the black community with a lesser population and they just moved here it's not helping matters. They just had forum locally hosted by the NAACP in the W-B area attended by skinheads and by all accounts it went quite well . Totally agree. The illegal alien issue is out of control and I have addressed it numerous times on this forum in the past. It makes my blood boil too.

NEPA is one of the whitest regions in the country.
Scranton, the region's biggest city, has just 3 percent black population. Carbondale has 0.23 percent. Take a look at City-Data's list of the least racially diverse cities. Four NEPA towns are in the Top 25; two in the Top 5. Quote:

I think It depends more on you and him. If your a welfare recipient with a bunch of little welfare babies, and he's a deadbeat, jobless bum that sponges off of you and your welfare check, and sells crack on the side... then NO! you will not be welcome here! But If he is a hardworking, good father, and you also are, then I see no reason why anyone would bother you.

If you did move here, you might want to consider moving to Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, or Stroudsburg. These cities have the biggest minority populations in the region, and therefore are probably more tolerant. But like I said before, welfare, ghetto trash need not apply! We have enough of that here already. This region was forged on the backs of hard working, blue collar miners, iron workers ect. We don't appreciate people that come here and expect a free ride. You must earn your keep.

You might as well had said "well, just as long as you're not like one of those black people we see in the movies or hear on the radio, you're more than welcome." I'm black, and the fact that an assumption would have even needed to be mentioned signifies your opinion's foundation is questionable. |
