Abington Community Garden
The Abington Community Garden has opened this year next to the Abington Senior Center on Route 307 (Winola Road) in Clarks Summit. Sponsored by the Abington Area Joint Rec Board, there are 100 individual plots available and 95 were "rented" this season. There are 3 sizes available: 10' x 10' for $15; 10' x 20' for $30; and 20' x 20' for $50. The fee is for the entire season and is used to pay for the public water available in the garden. A seven-foot tall fence surrounds the garden to keep deer/groundhogs from eating the plantings. A gardener can plant flowers/vegetables/herbs as long as it is NOT considered invasive (mint, spearmint, etc.). Trees or berry bushes are not allowed. In order to participate, a gardener must agree to attend various "work days" throughout the season to maintain the fence, make compost, cut grass on the paths, etc. Anyone interested in applying for a garden for the 2009 season can go to the website for the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board click on the garden and download the Guidelines and Application. http://www.aajrb.com/

Just don't be planting any funny-looking green leafy plants, if you catch my drift. P.S. If you do, then please bake me some brownies! (Wink, wink!)

I believe they have 3 plots left for the 2009 season...the abington library had a seminar yesterday
about preserving your harvest which was interesting...should be a good planting season...
