Default What is the buzzing in the trees?

Is it possible the buzzing noise I hear, which is loud and lasts about 30 seconds, is cicadas? I haven't seen any in my area and I thought they were done by now. Does anyone know? Has anyone seen any lately in the Delaware Water Gap area lately? thanks

I believe that's what it is. We used to get them every summer in NJ. Usually started around mid July if I remember right..maybe a little later.

Mostly I hear katydids. I think it's too late in the season for cicadas.

It could be a cicada. I was at the Shoppes at Montage yesterday to meet a friend from Olyphant for lunch at Panera Bread, and while on my cell phone checking to see why she was running so late I noticed this big thing fall off of one of the eaves of one of the stores onto the sidewalk. It looked exactly like a cicada flopping around on its back. I was going to turn the poor guy over, being a hippie humanitarian, but I thought better of it as I would soon be eating an overpriced sandwich.

Frank Froese is on a distinguished road
Cicadas... they look like huge flies, and vibrate plates in their thorax... which is what you hear.
