Default The proper way to say Wilkes-Barre

The proper way of Wilkes-Barre was to pronounce it as Wilkes-Barre` because Issac Barre` was a frenchman to whom Wilkes-Barre takes part of its name, until the depression the city was spelled as Wilkes-Barre` but for some reason the dialect of the immigrants broke it down, howver from 1806-1930 this was how it was to be pronounced so for those who pronounce it as Wilkes-BarrA your right, its not Wilkes-Barree, or Wilkes-Bar its how our founders named it, This was taken from the Luzerne County Historical Society.

Wait, so Wilkes-Barre is really a French name? I can't wait to see the looks I'll get when I start telling people I'm heading to the farmers' market in Wilkes-Beret!

Oops! Sorry about that. I also appologize for my spelling. It's horrendous!! And I'm aware of it . I know I spell many things wrong all the time, I usually just take a best guess when I'm not sure of the spelling of something. It's been many years since I've been in school, and I often forget how to spell even simple words. I guess I should invest in a dictionary. Yah?

so this is going around again....lol.

Col. Isaac Barre was of French origin so yes, there probably was an accent aigu over the 'e' in Barre, so as to encourage the pronunciation BA(r) RAY, would be my bet...

When I talk about Wilkes-Barre to 'outsiders' I say "Wilkes-Barry"; when I say it in passing to fellow Luzerne County martians, I go with "Wooksbare..."
