Well, here's an online image I recently stumbled upon that I find to be particularly disturbing:

As many of you know, I'm an avid "cheerleader" for the ongoing renaissance of Downtown Scranton from gritty slum to SoHo chic, and I'm a vocal opponent to the new "Shoppes @ Montage" lifestyle center slated to open just outside of the city limits on Montage Mountain this March. Now, to my horror, I also see that a new Lowe's and Target are likewise planning to move onto Montage Mountain, along one of the few remaining parcels of undeveloped property remaining on this once-pristine natural urban oasis turned suburban sprawl nightmare. Can someone explain to me why we need TEN Lowe's and Home Depots in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, along with TEN Wal-Marts and Targets?

Our population isn't nearly large enough to sustain so many duplicate chain stores in such close proximity to one another. I know this firsthand. As a two-year veteran loader at the Wilkes-Barre Township Lowe's, I've watched recently as the opening of new stores in Edwardsville and Stroudsburg have begun to drain away a significant portion of our clientele as compared to this same period last year. With a new Lowe's opening in Moosic and a new Home Depot opening in Pittston Township, how much more will our store be impacted? Granted, it was nice today to be quiet enough so that I could keep a steady supply of shopping carts on hand for our patrons, as compared to other weekends when we were so packed that people were circling the lot looking for parking spaces, but I worry if losing our Greater Pittston market share on top of recently-losing our Monroe County market share and our "Back Mountain/West Side" market share will be too much of a an added burden onto our store?

What say you all? Are you for this sort of added retail growth as a means of bringing in new tax revenues and job opportunities, or do you scorn them for compounding the region's escalating urban sprawl pandemic and draining the vitality from existing stores?

What will happen is HD and Lowe's will eventually close those stores that are "not performing" and are not in a A+ location. It all about location!

Wow! I can't imagine the people on that mountain keeping a Lowes or Target in business!! The only way I would be seen there is when I drive my daughter and a car load of friends to the movies and have nothing else to do for 2 hours.
