First of all, let me say welcome to the NEPA forum!!!! I'm considering relocation to the Scranton area myself and have been visiting this section for a couple of weeks now. You'll find the people on this forum to be very friendly and helpful. I don't know enough about the area to help you, but I am betting that ScranBarre, coartist88, iluvpa, or some of the others will be reponding to your post by this evening. In the meantime, here's some rep points for ya!

Although did they tell you that you have to pass an initiation to get into this forum?
You have to pronounce WilkesBarre correctly..... LOL.
ok, now I say the way my wife says it, and she's from right in that area, but her dad who lives nearby says it differently, and on top of that her mother, who recentlly moved out here to phoenix, says it a third, way, at the very least, its unfortunate,

Hi J.M.,
My wife and I moved here back in 2006 and we love it. Plenty of beautiful scenery and lakes. The people are friendly and when I walk the dogs I chat with the neighbors sitting on their porches as I walk by.
The area is starting to see a regrowth after years of decline as population overgrowth starts to spill in from New York, New Jersey and Philly. The only thing I would caution is to check the job market for your field before making the move to be sure there will be opportunities for you when you get here.
If you love nature and would like living in heavily forested areas while still being able to enjoy city life in the heart of the valley then you will love it as we do.
i guess if i had to write it out it would be something like
wilks bear
other ways i've heard it
wilks bar
or
wilks bar e
or
wilksberry
I think the majority of people say Wilkesberry as I asked upon moving here and when I listen to the radio the commercials all say Wilkesberry. You will get Wilkesbear alot though. What you won't hear here as I heard it down in Philly is Wilkesbarrow. I think that one is a nono.
