Pottsville PA (Reading, Minersville, Republic: lofts, house, asbestos)

Hi There! I have noticed that there are not a lot of active threads about Pottsville so I have started one. If anyone lives in/around pottsville or just has something to say about the citiy chime in. Maybe we can share thoughts, news and local gossip.

I'll start. Does anyone have any information on the plan to turn the old Yeungling Ice Cream Building into upscale lofts. I have heard rumors the project has fallen through. I hope it hasn't.

From what I have read the project has fallen through because of asbestos removal. Are there any other projects in the area?

I don't know of any other projects (although obviously I don't live there anymore).

One nice place I want to mention though is the Lazy Dog Cafe / Coffee Shop in Minersville. It's more like an upscale coffee shop that also sells food. I like coffee and I like living in larger cities that offer a lot of options when it comes to coffee shops, so I was definitely impressed and excited about this when I was visiting my parents in Pottsville.

It's by the Way Mart grocery store in Minersville. I think the building itself was a garage at one time and the new owners renovated it and did a GREAT job with it. I can't emphasize enough how impressed with it I am. The area needs nice places to go like this. They also offer free Wi-Fi and the coffee is decent as well. It's also open until 10 or 11PM each night, which makes it an attractive option for people who are looking for something other than a bar or Dunkin' Donuts.

That is nice. I saw the pictures and it seems to have an attractive atmosphere. Next time I am in the area I will have to stop by.

I know that a transportation center is in the construction works near the South side if downtown. A new Rail and Bus terminal is being built, hopefully to connect to Reading and other destinations. Hope it doesn't create an influx of Reading crime...

I believe that the new station complex is to be called Union Station but I had no idea that the project actually got of the ground. The Pottsville Republican had several stories about it a year or two ago with the concept plans and they looked really good. Also, from what I am aware there will be no daily trains going in and out of the station. The rail setup is mainly for occasional excursions. It would be great though if SEPTA etc. built up to Reading and continued into Pottsville.
Next time I get into Pottsville I will definitly be checking out this site again.

Does anyone know of anything else happening in the city? Is the idea of a Maroons movie going to be developed or has that idea died?

hm not sure.i just bought a house her ein pottsville. i like the small hippy type vibe...

im opening up a radio control hoby shop in town as well...

Did everyone hear... the Centre Station bus/train station is finally going up for construction. Bidding is finally starting for the project and its gonna be built!

Its not just an idea... its going to happen. This is big and I am excited.
