Default Centralia

Has anyone taken a trip to Centralia lately?
I was there a year ago. This was the
condition of Route 61.....

I've never been there but read up a bit on it.

In fact, I was ready to go there with my boys last year, but found that it's basically just a large open area now - the houses are all gone except for one or two. Didn't seem worthwhile to go that distance just to see a smoking road.

I was out there about 2 months ago. It was underwhelming. It would have been alot cooler in the early 90's when there were still abandoned houses.

Did the state come through and raze the existing abandoned homes?

(Safety issues with potential squatters, curious kids, etc I'm guessing)

I've been through Centralia. It's eerie because all the streets are still there but the lots are all overgrown and there are only a couple houses standing here and there. I wouldn't make a trip out of it but it's worth passing through if you're going on 61, or 54 for some other reason.

That picture shows the worst part of Route 61. I believe there is a bypass around that section.

Remind me what happened to Centralia !!! I forgot I would venture a guess, but don't want to get laughed at !!!

And just a pleasant reminder -- DON'T GET OLD

FightinPhil --- Thank you for refreshing my memory. I knew it had something to do with gases or fires.
