After hearing yet another inbred local redneck scream "faggiiittttt" out of his car window at me while I was walking along North River Street in Downtown Wilkes-Barre today, I'm becoming further and further disillusioned with this area's potential revival. What good is this area if so many people are homophobic and racist? Instead of attracting EDUCATED employers like PwC or GlaxoSmithKline, we'll continue to attract the bottom of the barrel companies like Wal-Mart, TJ Maxx, etc.

The bigotry is the effect of the problem not the cause. I know plenty of very competent bigots. In the same way I wouldnt goto another country showing off my Americaness I don’t know that I would promote my diversity in Wilkes-Barre. I’ve heard stories about black people that goto the Noxen rattlesnake roundup but never actually met any of them. That could go 2 ways. You really aren’t allowed to be any better off/different/cooler then anyone else without a consequence. I have no plans of buying a nice car until I have my own driveway.

The real reason good companies don’t come in is favors. You have no idea how many favors you have to pull just to open up a restaurant here. Ive heard stories from contractors that had to redo all the wiring in a place because the inspector went around and cut all the cabling because it wasn’t good enough. As soon as you try to do anything(look at the sterling) you get 3 lawsuits. The casino was set to pull out because of all of it. Big companies don’t want to deal with that kind of stuff in a small hick town.

In the 50's GM was going to open an auto plant where the arena is now. The coal companies didnt want it so it didnt happen.

Good post. I've always wondering why there wasn't an auto plant here in NEPA and why the area can't attract good, well paying companies. It has nothing to do with racism or bigotry, you have that in every part of the country. Some people will never accept other types of people and there's nothing anybody can do to change that. I'm not saying it's right, it's just the way it is.

Very interesting dichotomy on this forum. You have the people that love it and those that are forced to live it. It seems to be divided among the imports and the lifers or those who choose the life and those that had no choice. If I can go a step further might I say the Poconos and the Cities?

Many people across the stae are rude and inconsiderate. I know many kids at my central penn suburban school act the same way as that local redneck you mentioned. It is sad that people can act that way.
