Default Which jobs are on the edge and the future of NE PA

Which jobs seem to be suffering and will continue to suffer because of the economy? How will it affect the local economy in the NEPA?

As an aspiring accountant I'm actually hopeful that once this current downturn in the economy passes (the market has currently rebounded by nearly 400 points as I type this), then even stricter government oversight of publicly-traded companies (perhaps Sarbanes-Oxley on steroids) will create more opportunities for accounting positions.

Anything in terms of the actual production of a product is a thing of the past. Slowly but surely, the only two professions left are going to be desk jockey or service industry. Obviously, the trades will still be strong, and perhaps stronger as nobody seems to know how to repair anything these days without a check book.

Right now I do not see tourism booming in the NEPA. People do not have the extra money to spend on vacations, so I think that the tourism especially in this area will see the crunch.

Come the new year, I'm gonna have to start pounding the streets for a new job...

Since I don't want to go back into what I was doing before, (landscape design) & because of the economy the way it is, I've been doing a lotta thinking about which job sectors would be the ones to target.

Because "frivolities" & "extras" are on the decline 'cause folks just don't have the money for them, the 2 areas I thought about were:
1) getting a job in a food store like Publix or Winn-Dixie (people are ALWAYS gonna have to eat)
and
2) a funeral home (likewise on the "people are always"....)

Other than "toilet paper manufacturing", these are the 2 areas I figured will ALWAYS be busy!!!

The area thats good to find a job in is healthcare. You have to first see whats really in need. I am an x-ray tech and cannot seem to find anything here in NEPA. I was told that 5 years ago they added 2 schools for x-ray techs and this has made a slowdown of jobs. The funny thing is I seen 3 jobs in the past month and sent in my resume and noone has called for an interview. I find this strange. The jobs are still posted but nobody calls .

If you check each hospital you will see by the list what jobs are in need. Thats a good way to see what to go for. Of course NURSES are number one.

good luck,
roxy

Service areas like roxxy mentioned: Healthcare, mental health 2 areas that are always going to be in demand. Law related jobs - another area that continues to grow.

Healthcare is a whole story in itself!! I always hear they're complaining about a "nursing shortage", but the budget cuts at the hospitals prevents them hiring & even threatens current employees!!

My partner worked in the ER of one of our hospitals here for 15 years. He had to go out on leave in January for a major operation, & was told his job was secure. After healing, he went to go back & was told they had to lay him off due to budget cuts, but to "check back" in January when the new budgets would be out!! Since then, they've layed off a BUNCH more staff who also have been there a long time!!

Also, when he came home from the hospital after the operation, he had to be on IV antibiotics for 35 days with twice-weekly monitoring via blood tests for all his levels. They sent out a "home health" nurse who didn't even know how to draw blood from a picc line (my partner had to do it himself), & all the nurse did was complain how bad his back was hurting him!! I threw the nurse outta the house & called to get another nurse!!

The manager of the home health company said another nurse would be there first thing in the morning...well, nobody ever showed!! I called yet again & was informed they had no other nurses available who could draw blood!! SO....we both ended up doing the IV's & testing ouselves for a month!! Can you imagine if my partner was like me & not medically trained?? That poor patient would be just SOL!!

I'm sure the hospitals in NEPA are experiencing the same "crunches" as here, but one medical venue I've noticed is always looking for help AND hiring is medical billing!!

I guess it doesn't matter so much what QUALITY of care a patient gets as long as they PAY!!!
