Bankrate.com -- Safe & Sound (tm): Bankrate's free rating system for banks, thrifts, credit unions

My bank seems to be fine. This is a good site to check how your bank is doing in this slowing economy.

Default MY Credit Union ...

Received a lousy rating. I think I'll withdraw most of my money tomorrow morning.

My credit union got a 3 out of 5. I'm not sure if I should be worried, but I am a bit.

Don't all banks have FDIC anyway? I'm not worried...I should be so lucky for all my creditors to go under...(only kidding!)

They announced this morning that they are going to raise the amount of FDIC from $100,000 too $250,000. I guess they are afraid people are going to be putting their money in their mattresses .

Problem is the fdic is pretty much insolvent if anymore than 30 billion or so has to be paid out. it will take an act of congress to refill them, until that happens you can have to wait and wait and wait with no access to your money . they have 117 banks on rtheir watch list. not a fuzzy feeling.

i myself prefer a us treasury money market or t-bills for emergency cash i may need to hold me over in the event a rash of banks exceed the fdic funds
