Ya imagine that......He makes $50,000 a year...He gave up 5% to "help" cut costs...Then he gave everyone in the admin a raise of $3,000 to $3500each. The 5% knocked him down to $47,000 a year then he budgeted a raise for himself up to $55,000 a year so now after the 5% cut he is making more then before..
You don't think that Doherty is only making his salary as mayor do you?
Whats up Lus bored with your 4 other friends over there across the hall? Nobody to make fun of this week? Had to come in and give the little chipper a pep talk huh? Why not try and just take his rosey glasses off.
You know what Dan ... I used to let you bother me ... but ... not anymore ... and well at least I have 4 friends ... And last I knew it was not a bad thing to try and cheer someone up after being pretty much attacked by the likes of you ...
Dan ... you can try and get under my skin all you want ... I am not here for any other reason than I enjoy reading the posts and every now and again commenting on them ... it's a nice place to visit ... most of the people here are worth talking to ... and I don't care if you like me being here or not ... and I'll throw you a pitty party if that's what you want. Maybe you should borrow those glasses once in a while so you can see the good that is in your life instead of constantly dwelling on the bad things ... it's gonna eat you up.
I feel kinda bad for Scranton. Scranton is like that little pathetic boy with asthma that everybody picks on in school. It's sad and entertaining at the same time.
OK y'all have lost me! Were all these things about the mayor etc. on SNL also????? Am I on the wrong thread?? How 'bout those Carolina Panthers!!!!
How 'bout those Nittany Lions?! You've been absent from our forum for far too long, Mary, if you don't remember that each and every thread about the city of Scranton devolves into political oblivion in which battle lines are drawn. Politics are a blood sport in Scranton, and you can't remain "netural." I think the most neutral ones on here are FightinPhils and NYRangers2008, while the rest of us seem to tilt towards Dan or towards me in these epic battles. FightinPhils agrees with Dan's principles but thinks he takes them too far. NYRangers2008 rubber stamps everything Dan says. I agree with Dan on some levels, especially because I'm a fiscal conservative, but his pessimism has just become so expansive now that it threatens to devour everything in its path. He has this notion that Scranton = Titanic (sinking fast with no hope of recovery, so just grab a tub of popcorn and enjoy the ride). I have the notion that Scranton = Phoenix (the famed bird, not the arid dust bowl of a suburb they call a city).
No one should be feel sorry for poor ol' Doherty only making $50,000. He doesn't deserve to even be making that much. Not for the job he's doing. He gets money from other sources, so he's far from poor.
Paul, I don't "rubber stamp" everything Dan says. I happen to agree with 90 percent of what he says. We're just on the same page when it comes to Doherty and the horrible state of this city.

The problem is that while Doherty himself might be derived from affluence (hence his posh Green Ridge mansion that I photographed in one of my tours, as seen below), Scranton overall is a working-class city with blue-collar roots. You're not going to attract anyone with a strong financial or economic background to this leadership position for just $50,000 per year when they could earn twice as much in the private sector. Many of the positions I've been interviewing for start at around $50,000 per year. By the time I'm 45 and possibly considering political office I could easily be earning six-figures with a Ph.D. Why would I want to sacrifice that for a position that pays so relatively little for all of the stress involved? Mayor Doherty is chronically under a microscope. I'm sure Mayor Connors had his fair share of critics as well (I'm too young to remember his opposition, if any). I'm certain Evans, DiBileo, or whoever succeeds Doherty will also be berated tirelessly. Ironically the same ones exalting Evans on DohertyDeceit will probably condemn her if and when she is elected and doesn't pander enough to their wishes. After all, are we not talking about the SAME Scranton residents that worshiped every blade of grass that the Piccolino family stood upon when they railed against the mayor's eminent domain case against their family restaurant, Buona Pizza, only to be ostracized mere months later when their son became a "spoiler" in the election? Obviously people in Scranton are NOT easy to please. Why would ANY educated person strive to endure such stress and misery for just $50,000? Increase that to $80,000, which the mayor of Wilkes-Barre currently earns to ironically govern 30,000 fewer residents, and you'll attract a wider range of candidates.

I agree with a lot of what Dan says too. The problem is that he's downright NASTY to people for no particular reason. As of today there is a major scandal going on in my own subdivision (which may or not hit the local media, so stay tuned on that one), and this is just the latest in the soap opera they call "Pittston: 90210" that has me shaking my head in disbelief. I'm highly concerned about the direction my community is headed in, but that's no excuse for me to go around calling people names and hurting feelings just because I feel like it. He regularly insults me, ScrantonLuna, CHS89, to570717, LusOnlyVoice, and everyone else whom he deems to be a "sheep." He even squabbled briefly with coartist88 some time ago, and I know our trusty former moderator to personally be a very hospitable, friendly, easy-going type of guy who wouldn't go around picking fights with anyone for the hell of it. Dan THRIVES on picking fights with others and then prancing around when he feels like he has the upper hand. I just don't understand that, nor do I understand how you can tolerate such juvenile antics.
You can malign your city's administration while still having CLASS, can you not? I may be a "foaming at the mouth liberal," but that is only on SOCIAL issues. When it comes to finances I'm a penny-pincher. If I were ever elected to the city I'd hardly spend one solitary cent until I was sure the city was back on solid financial footing. That's what Scranton needs right now. Your current mayor had good intentions, but he knew little about fiscal conservatism. Then you have Janet Evans, who seems to be very budget-oriented but has NO apparent vision for the city (or at least has never made such goals known to her constituency). Do we want to flip-flop to trade progress and mounting debt for no progress and solid books?
