No matter what school district you are in, it is up to the parents to instill values etc. I am not my boys friend, I am their parent and therefore I lead by example ; not very good as the kids tell me to watch my french every now and then. But when they are adults, I hope to be their friend then. If the parents are involved in the kids lives daily, then the kids will do well. If not, who can blame the kids.

I went to Catholic schools growing up & had to wear uniforms...it DOES make a difference!!
I agree 100% with parents being parents again!! So many people that have kids (that I've seen) do the "I want to be a friend to my kids" thing instead of instilling a good example of an "authority figure" , & the kids in this environment are outta control & have no respect for ANY authority!!
As far as the schools, I still say "bring back the nuns"!!! If we did anything wrong we got a ruler edge across the knuckles & then WORSE when we got home with the note to our parents!!! We learned right from wrong after the 1st time though!!!
Damm!!!! I sound like my father!!!

Pittston Area, my alma mater, also has a very strict dress code now in effect, and I couldn't be happier for my sister, who is a teacher at the high school. When I attended as recently as 2005 overall the students dressed appropriately (we're a suburban school district after all), but you always had those "non-conformists" who tried incessantly to conform to non-conforming that they completely defeated the purpose of non-conformity! LOL! You also had the jocks who would wear tight muscle shirts and jeans so tight that they left nothing to the imagination. You had girls, as HighHat described, who wore very short skirts. I was (and still am) very preppy, and I often voluntarily wore button-down shirts beneath sweaters with khaki cargo pants and dress shoes. Most of my friends dressed similarly. My biggest fashion gripe of all though has to be my male peers who wear their jeans so low that nearly the entirety of their boxers are showing. WHY?!

Down here in Palm Beach County, they actually passed a LAW against those & quite a few kids got arrested so far!!!
Guess it got to the point where the boxers outshone the pants!! (gives new meaning to the song "Moon Over Miami"!!! )

Everytime I see one of these clowns wearing their pants hanging off their arses, I think of Denis Leary's skit about this topic and I think of him saying "PULL UP YOUR PANTS!"

Plus, the fashion trends these days can create more of a distraction to learning than ever before...the boys all want to dress like ghetto trash with their big bagg pants hanging off of their arses with their underwear hanging out, and the girls dress like cheap hookers, showing way too much skin.
Walking around downtown Wilkes-Barre on my afternoon break after the high school kids get out of school makes me grateful that my kids go to Scranton schools and wear uniforms. Thos kids hanging around after school in W-B look like hoodlums and prostitutes.

Go Phillies, An excellent post. Yes, school is a place to prepare kids for life and you are correct. Imagine getting a job in a bank with wearing your pants down to their arses. Do the public schools in Scranton maintain uniforms? It is nice to see other parents out there that understand the importance of a dress code.

LOL, I laughed when I read your post. I went to the Catholic schools, and I have to say at that time we had a great respect for our parents, schools, etc. I wore a uniform up until I reached high school. My parents worked hard and couldn't afford all the expensive sneakers that kids were starting to wear. However, I can tell you that there would be no way I would even think of wearing a hoouchie mama skirt - because first, I had modesty and I knew if I ever put anything like that on - I would not get past the front door.
Yes, the nuns kept us in line - thank goodness the Hat never got hit. We were taught respect. We also had parents who knew who our friends were and were there for us when we came home from school. The problems still lies when society accepts this type of decourum of dress.

yes...Scranton public schools require uniforms. Although its not as strict at the high school level. For the elementary and intermediate schools, they have to wear khaki pants (girls can wear khaki skirts also) and polos, sweaters, sweater vests, or turtlenecks with Scranton School District monogrammed on them. The high schools also must wear khakis and polos, but they don't have to be the monogramed SSD ones, for whatever reason.

The only thing with the Catholic school uniforms is that the girls' skirts seem to be awfully short these days...

Actually, the West Scranton high school doesn't have uniforms, but a very strict dress code. It's all of the things that Western Wayne has except the clothes have to be solid colors, no stripes, patterns or lettering/logos.
They also cannot have the same color tops & bottoms ie. black & black.
No visible piercings except ears.
All clothes must fit properly. Now some of the girls come out with tight pants, but no baggy ones. Also no extra pockets.
The elementary and middle schools have the uniforms. It makes mornings a lot easier. I'm not sure why the high schools don't have them. The kids are used to wearing them by the time they get to HS, so why not continue?

Wow! I am thinking the other districts should adopt this as well. It all makes sense. Gives the students a sense of discipline and community spirit. As far as the Catholic Schools - I do agree that that the skirts are too short these days. Back in the day it was "an inch above the knee" -
